Hi all

Have just taken my first lot of Clomid and am looking for success stories aswell as personal experiences with this med.

DH and I have been ttc for just over 3 years with no luck, we thought it would be easy because I had had no hormone contraception for years..............how wrong we were!! We have had all the tests for ov and swimmers and blockages etc and they can find nothing that should stop us conceiving naturally but because we have been trying for so long I was prescribed Clomid. I know very little about this med but my friend was prescribed it for PCOS. Does anyone know how successful it is?? So that is my story so far. Hope to hear froms lots of people, this is the first time I have been on a thread like this so hoping we can keep moral up and have that PMA that is apparently so important. [smle]

Babydust to everyone

Hi auntiemoo nice to meet you ( am waving and passing bar of chocolate)

I am half way through my third cycle of clomid. There are many success stories so please be positive there is also a good thread on here called taking clomid for the first time.

My side effects have been quite mild, only hot flushes and tiredness.

I know some say they really suffer but there are also plenty that dont.

Are you having tests to check progesterone levels during your cycle or having any scans.

Hope to see you on the other thread

What investigative tests have you both have done to date?. I ask this only because some tests are often missed out. These missed tests can sometimes be the answer as to why conception is not readily happening. Have you therefore been given the unexplained subfertility "diagnosis"?. Unexplained subfertility simply means they have failed to find out what is wrong (and that can also happening generally speaking because the couple has not been adequately investigated).

Clomid is given to women who present with ovulatory problems; it is designed to make the ovaries work harder. It looks like it has been prescribed without you having any sort of diagnosis beforehand and that is not ideal. It may not be the ideal treatment for you.

Are you being monitored whilst on clomid?. You should be monitored as a matter of course otherwise you will have no way of knowing whether its working or not.

Are you a private patient or are you under the NHS?.

Hi thanks for your replies, I am having a scan tomorrow which is day 15 of my first cycle on clomid. I think then if my follicles are mature i will be offered an injection to make me release an egg. As far as I am aware they will monitor me for each cycle, I'm an NHS patient and the tests DH and I have had are, bloods (for me various days of cycle) hysterosalpingogram to check for blockages and DH has had counts done twice, have had a scan too and swabs and stuff so am hoping that this stuff works for us. I'm not sure whether I need to have more bloods done this month but am sure i will find out off consultant or nurse tomorrow, I'm figuring that if I ovulate anyway then maybe I will just have more (in numbers) mature follicles than I would normally but I'm only guessing.

Auntie - I'm no expert but have just been referred to the NHS fertility clinic and we were sent for all the tests that you mention so it sounds like you've covered all the standard investigations. Would be interested to know from Atilla or others if there are any other investigations that should be done?

Good luck Auntie. Wishing you well - hope you conceive! Keep us posted x

The most common tests that tend to be omitted are:-

Adequate x-rays of the uterus which may show abnormalities not otherwise seen at laparoscopy.

Hysteroscopy - telescope inspection of the inside of the uterus which may occasionally show abnormalities not seen otherwise

Repeated sperm counts over several weeks and months to make sure there is no subtle abnormality

Testing the sperm in special media such as swim up testsvelocity testing. However, when they are done, they often uncover a hidden cause for the suppposed unexplained problem

Thorough hormone tests to detect abnormalities of male hormone or early falls in progesterone

Scanning of the ovaries to see if follicles really are developing and there are no sign of polycystic ovaries

Any test result done over six months ago should be discounted.
