Hi ladies,

For all of you that have had acupuncture when TTC does it hurt much? I'm scared of needles but really want to give it a try!!!

How regular do you need to have sessions? Once a week? Or less?

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks

Tabby, i have recently started acupuncture, to regain my lost energy. i've only had 2 sessions and seen vast improvements so i'm carrying on with it while ttc. it doesnt hurt - on a few of the points, it can feel a bit wierd but nothing more than a few seconds. i find it really relaxing and then a couple of days after, i have more energy than i know what to do with! my sessions were a couple of weeks apart, i have another with a 3 week gap, although i think if she was seeing me just with regard to fertility, it'd be more often, maybe weekly?
I also had it when I was pg with dd, to stop the carzy itching i got in the final few weeks; it didnt cure me but it certainly relieved it wuite a bit.

I'd say go for it, and good luck!

Yes. For me - it hurt!
Try reflexology.. that's much nicer! and apparently effective. There are specialist fertility/maternity reflexologists. I tried both, but gave up on the acupuncture after one excruciating session... oh I can still practically feel the pain now, 6 months later. It makes me squirm. I see the reflexologist once a fortnight. Still maybe that's just me... perhaps the acupuncturist just stuck it in the wrong spot... who knows?

Didn't hurt for me. I had it done whilst first pregnant to get rid of a horrendous headache I'd had for five weeks, it was great.

Buda · 09/11/2008 19:35

Didn't hurt for me. I had it for PMS and for allergies not TTC. But I found it fantastic and it doesn't hurt.

nickytwotimes · 09/11/2008 19:38

Didn't hurt me either and I am a wuss!
I had it for relaxation.

MmeLindt · 09/11/2008 19:40

Did not hurt the first time I tried it but it made me tingle and I fainted

The poor midwife had to try to stop me (9mths pregnant) slipping to the floor.

I was almost 2 weeks overdue and ready to try anything. Did not work though.

The second pregnancy I tried again (and I have always been scared of needles so it was a bit step for me). That time it did hurt, by Jesus it did. Only the one needle, in the little toe. It did start some contractions though so I guess it was good for something.

I had the sessions once a week for the last pregnancy.

acupuncture doesn't hurt, though it can sometimes feel like a little scratch when the needle goes in.

I have it for energy, but my acupuncturist is a specialist in fertility. check out her website for more info www.caitlinallen.co.uk

SalBySea · 09/11/2008 20:01

yes it hurt for me - not like an injection or anything but it was certainly uncomfortable and unpleasant

grownupbabes · 09/11/2008 21:35

I think maybe my acupuncturist hit a nerve or something - my experience was not like any above. Sharp, teeth-grinding, excruciating pain. Maybe just a bad do... still reflexology was great (as already mentioned!PS I am not a reflexologist!!!!

poppy34 · 09/11/2008 21:37

no it shouldnt do -although that said I went to see a different woman when I wanted to be induced and it hurt like hell... olivo description better -should tingle a bit and no more. And FWIW I think it was key to my healthy conception/pregnancy after lots of problems

tabby26 · 09/11/2008 22:04

Thank you all for you lovely and kind messages! I am definately going to give it a go now! Thanks again ladies you've been a great help

I get the tingling think that others have mentioned. However, there is one particular point which she does, just below my big toe joint which hurts like buggery!

My dh finds acupuncture really painful, but then he's just a sensitive little soul.

mags98 · 09/11/2008 23:21

I found a couple of points extremely painful - the one by my toe and the one on the inside of the ankle in particular. It wasn't a sharp pain like a needle but more of a severe aching that lasted up to 15 minutes sometimes. I went for weekly sessions for several weeks and in the end had to tell her to stop using those points as it was making me too stressed which was sort of defeating the object! Most of the others were ok though, it tingled a bit but was fine so she was able to avoid the painful ones.

There was one time when I saw a different man when the regular woman was away. He did one point on the inside of my knee that when he did it, he suddenly hit a nerve and made my whole leg kick out and go into a cramp that lasted a good 10 mins - that was a rather odd experience!

I wouldn't say I enjoyed it and I don't know if it actually worked, but I am now 12 1/2 weeks so who cares!

minxi · 10/11/2008 09:34

I went for about 8 weeks after 3 years of ttc - didn't hurt except the very last session I had, the needle was in my wrist and my arm was pulsating - excruciatingly painful!!! Hand went numb but that was the session that must have got things moving as I fell pg that month!! Good luck x

teasleepfood · 10/11/2008 09:36

Minxi- Is that you from FFF website? If so thank you for all your help and advice! Glad you fell PG! I had twins!

amelied · 10/11/2008 12:17

Hi

I don't find it painful and feel on a high afterwards - that is when I get stuck into the housework I am attending a lovely acupuncturist who specializes in fertility. I attend for the the first three weeks after my period starts as she explained it is better to have before ovulation. It is expensive but the result will be worth it.
Good luck!

tabby26 · 10/11/2008 22:22

Thanks everyone! Will give it a go! Not sure about needles in my toes though might have to get them to miss that one

Thanks again xx
