quick question about opks

  • i have used these for a couple of months but haven't been getting proper positives. do they work for everyone or is it likely that i am not ovulating?

i have been ttcing #2 for 7 months now and am becoming increasingly worried that i'm not actually ovulating
especiall as i used to be able to feel ovualtion but now don't seem to be able to recognise the signs.

any thoughts welcome please....

You might not get a positive even though you are ovulating - are you using digital or just where the line gets darker ? I didn't get a postive (on a digital) the month I conceived (and hadn't some other months although I had a number of blood tests to confirm I was) !

If you conceived number 1 easily (or are over 35) then your gp would run some initial blood tests to check you are ovulating.

that's comforting to know thanks wheelbug

  • i'm using the ones where the line gets darker and have seen some lightish ones but not a really dark one like the illustration on the packet!

if it doesn't happen this month, maybe i'll ask gp to do those tests - i am 34 so just under watershed of 35 - do you think they will run tests if i haven't been trying for a year?

I never really got on with the ones where the line got darker - too open to interpretation. At least with the digitals I knew where I was (although as I say I didn't always get positives even though I clearly was ovulating).

I think it will depend on your gp. I conceived dd v. easily and conceived a second time v. easily. I then miscarried. After 8 months of ttc again I went to the doctors and got a sympathetic one who ran all the initial tests (day 2 tests and day 21 tests and a scan). Others might not but if you're worried I would push for day 21 blood tests at least as that would put your mind at rest as to whether you are ovulating or not.

Wheelybug · 23/10/2008 18:39

oh, I was 32 at the time... actually may have been 31. Yes, think I was 31.

i am also 34 and conceived ds 1 and 2 within 1st month. Decided to try for no 3 and it is taking longer so used OPK for 1st time last month. Used clear view and didn't get clear pos line for 3 days and was convinced wasn't ovulating as box said some women don't ovulate every month and then got v strong pos. I got the same OPK this month as know work for me. They are expensive though. may have to try internet cheepies next month. Any advice anyone on which ones to get??

rislip · 23/10/2008 19:14

Two please - this is happening to me too. And I'm 7 months in trying. Will maybe try digital next month. I wonder at what point you can go to visit the doctor and ask for help.

thequietone · 23/10/2008 19:17

These didn't work for me first time round - got lucky after 1 1/2 years. Second time round used them again (yes, we have problems getting pregnant), and it turned out that I ovulate very late at 21 days, then period at 28 days. Nice short wait before finding out if I was pregnant, but it took me years and years to discover this. Hope that helps, as we're not all 14 day ovulaters (is there such a word?). Good luck.

twoplease · 23/10/2008 19:33

thanks all,

i am wondering if i ovulate later - always thought it was earlier as i usuall have a short cycle but now i'm not so sure.

am going to keep going with them for much later in cycle this month just to check. if no luck, might go to gp just to get it on m record and see what happens.

was going to try clearblue but haven't reall got the finances for it - got my cheapies from access diagnostics and ebay - i know they work for other people/

also, i drink loads of water/fluids - will this dilute lh in system so won't show up on test?

The month i conceived our baby girl i was using opk's and i didn't get a positive result - so they don't work for everyone!

insywinsyspider · 23/10/2008 19:50

I would recommend ov tests from here I used these for ds2 and dc3, because they are cheap I literally tested every day from end of af till I got positive and then couple of days after, I don't ov till CD23 so was peeing in a pot for a long time but might be worth it just to check you don't ov late - are you just using them at certain time in your cycle?
I also temped too, think looking for a combination of signs helps

good luck x

twoplease · 23/10/2008 21:32

thanks lcy - that sounds hopeful then!

insy,i have stopped at about cd18 before but am going to carry on this month - don/t think it can be much later than that though as sometimes i have cycles of 23-25 days.
i guess you are right - i should look for a number of signs. i think what has confused me is that i was looking for ewcm which i get around cd 10-12 and so was expecting to get pos opk next da and that isn't happening.

i do appreciate it isn't an exact science so will keep at it!!

does anyone know if you always ovulate at the same time each month. I used OPK last month and got surge on CD16. This is CD17 now and still no surge, that will mean i ovulate really late. I am worried that iw ont ovulate this month as read some women do. Nice to hear from you insy - hows it going?

CoteDAzur · 27/10/2008 17:20

I never got any positives with OPK in the two months we TTC'ed, and I was peeing on those sticks twice a day for two weeks each month.

Yet I got pregnant that second month. Go figure.
