Anyone TTC who has had recurrent miscarriage and now on metformin for Polycystic Ovaries?

Was advised at the recurrent miscarriage clinic on Monday that I have polycystic ovaries and that this may be a contributing factor for my recurrent miscarriages - four in total. Will be prescribed metformin. I have regular periods so I guess I do ovilate but just have poor quality eggs. Anyone having a similar experience?

WB - I too have PCOS - I find it difficult to get pregnant and difficult to hold on to them. I have had 2 miscarriages - both around 8 wks and was told my PCOS gave me a 70% chance of mc.
In between the 2 m/c I had 4 cycles of clomid and 2 full cycles of IVF - all failed to get me pregnant.
In the run-up to my 2nd IVF my consultant prescribed Metformin to help regulate my hormones and therefore improve IVF success chances.
Have to say I luved it - my skin cleared up - I lost 2 stone - and just felt much better. However when the IVF failed again I came off it (last July).
In Feb this yr I asked my GP if I could go back on it just to clear my skin up... it had got bad again. He prescribed me 1500 mg a day and in April I conceived naturally... I stayed on the Met until 10 wks and then stopped taking it and am currently 15 wks pregnant.
I hope this is of some help - as soon as I tested positive after being on the Met for 3 mobnths I felt more pregnant than with either of my m/c - if that makes sense.

what a great outcome for you Rosy - thanks for replying and good luck with your pregnancy. I am hopeful that this too might fix me - the weight loss sounds like a bonus too (I'm about 1 and a half to two stone overweight for my height having already lost 16 pounds at Weight Watchers over the last couple of months)

The prof that I saw on Monday says that I'll be taking 1000 mg a day on 2 500mg doses. Did you find that it had any negative side affects?

Sorry for delayed reply WB - don't get chance to come online much.

Well done on your weight loss - mine is seriously back to how it was before the Met... 1000 mg a day sounds good and if you can cope with that they may up it to 1500. And ooohhh yes - it has some negative side effects - serious tummy upset in the 1st few days. Keep some Immodium with you at all times. It helps to take them half way through a meal or straight after a meal. It may help to take 500mg a day (1 tablet a day) for a couple of days and then up it to 2. There is a website called Fertility Friends which has message boards dedicated to Ladies on Metformin - they have lots of advice and you can pick up some good tips.

Try to stick with it - the bad tummy soon calms down and the benefits outway the cons. Being on it for 3 months before getting pregnant is a good tip - I had to take it 3 months before the IVF for it to have any benefit and I was on it for 3 months before this pregnancy - and it worked for me - fingers crossed for you too!!!
