Question about ovulation

Hi there. This is probably a stupid question, but I've started using ovulation kits 2 months ago. The surge showed later the first month than the last month. Can ovulation vary quite a lot from month to month, or is it usually within a couple of days?

Period due tomorrow and I'm sure it's on its way - feeling very pre-menstrual today.

it can vary quite a bit depending on stress or illness or anything else which upsets your balence.

the last 3 months mines have been cds 14,11 and 16.

Your luteal phase ( from ov to af) is supposed to remain the same whatever happens though.

Hi - I used persona kits for a year and the ovulation day would vary betweenn day 11 and 15. AF would arrive 23 - 28 days. But everyone is different!

gigglewitch · 21/06/2008 01:09

same as suepoo - i used a persona monitor and the ovulation indicator did vary quite a bit - like she says around 4 days range. ditto everyone's different. i also used the clearblue ovulation predictor kits - and got boys both times if that means anything
wish you luck

Depends on how regular your AF is - the only "absolute" (sort of) is that your AF will start 14 days post-ovulation. The pre-ovulation phase is the variable part.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 21/06/2008 07:57

Ovulation is not an exact science and a woman can ovulate earlier, later or not at all in any given cycle. It can as easily happen on the 10th day as well as the 21st.

The ideal therefore that AF could start 14 days post-ovulation is incorrect. It's a guide based on a 28 day cycle; a poor one at that as only around 12% of all women have such cycles.

LPD (luteal phase defect) is somewhat controversial; some doctors do regard it is as a problem whilst others say not.

Ovulation is more likely to happen when periods are regular rather than irregular in nature. What are your periods like, if they are irregular these kits are a waste of money.

OPK's are beset with problems anyway; such usage assumes that all women only have one rise in LH every month and that such a rise is immediately followed by ovulation. Both of these are simply not true.

ATM - it is enerally accepted in medical arenas that the normal luteal phase is usually about 14 days, regardless of length of gap between periods.
See netdoctor's adice
Of course it can vary a bit but it is the pre-ovulation gap that tends to vary more.

beaniesteve · 21/06/2008 09:58

It's not an absolute that your period starts 14 days after ovulation. Mine starts ten days after ovulation.

WorzselMummage · 21/06/2008 11:57

A normal luteal phase is anything between 10 and 16.

WorzselMummage · 21/06/2008 11:58

blimy, 10 and 16 days

beaniesteve · 21/06/2008 12:07

Mine is sometimes 9 days.
I have read that DRs don't tend to recognise luteal phase defect.

Am taking vitamin B6 but the doseage of my tablets is low so should I just take loads?

AttilaTheMeerkat · 21/06/2008 14:52

LPD is not always recognised as a definitive problem by doctors, some say that LPD is not an issue at all whilst others disagree and say it is a problem.

The page quoted was about natural planning methods and charting; it still talked about ovulation occuring 14 days before the start of the next period . This particular assertion is just plain wrong and is particularly pertinent if cycles are irregular in nature.

thumbwitch · 21/06/2008 16:42

beaniesteve - it is never a good plan to self-overdose on supplements as even the safest can have knock-on effects on other systems in the body.
Read this to see what is ok for B6 levels. B vitamins need to be kept in balance with each other which is why it is often (but not always) better to take B complex rather than individual B vits.
Even if you don't get overdose symptoms, take note that B6 can accelerate iron excretion, which could lead to iron deficiency.

beaniesteve · 22/06/2008 13:39

I'm taking B complex and iron (not every day) and also vitamin c. Was also trying to eat more vitamin b rich foods!

My cycles are regular, every 24 days. I just ovulated (CD15) so if my period comes as normal this month my luteal phase will once again be 9 days.
