Trying to conceive a second baby at 40 after chemical pregnancies

I just wondered if anyone had any advice or positive stories to share really as starting to feel down about TTC baby no.2.
I have had multiple chemical pregnancies, but been TTC for a year now (age 40) but doesn’t seem to be happening. All of my blood tests are normal. I so want a sibling for my 2 year old daughter….

No advice really besides maybe talking to a fertility doctor, they can give you more accurate understanding on what is going on, run extra tests and read them more accurately and also have you tested partners sperm. Im 40 and also trying to have another baby. Most of my kids are all grown now but we started over when I was 35 so now have a 4 and 2yr old. Trying to have one more but its not happing for me either. We did ivf for the last 2 kids and now on my 3rd round of ivf and have just has a transfer so here's to hoping. Im also in perimenopaus and have issues with making viable embryos, my husband also has low sperm count . Not positive story here just yet but wanted to jump on and show some support. Dont give up just yet, I think maybe you might just need a bit if extra support with maybe some medications.

Hi, I’m not an expert, but I would recommend checking egg and sperm quality, as well as aneuploidy, since these are among the most common causes of pregnancy loss.

My partner and I (both 40) had three chemical pregnancies in four months before one stuck.
We focused on changing lifestyle habits to prevent DNA fragmentation. He’d been taking hot baths and drinking lots of energy drinks, and the hot temperatures especially have been found reliable enough at destroying sperm to be a contraceptive!
It was only once he’d had three clear months of better habits things worked, so fresh sperm that wasn’t damaged. Could have been a coincidence, but there’re definitely lots of steps each party can take to improve the health of developing eggs and sperm.

Don’t give up 😊

I would consider IVF sooner rather than later. 42 is too old at many clinics. At 40 you still have a really good chance of a pregnancy that sticks, but the chance does start to go down quite rapidly at this age and in eighteen months you might find yourself in the situation that I was in — many many chemical pregnancies down, too old for IVF to be a plausible option with my own eggs, so trying every month without much likelihood of success. In my case, I carried on having chemical pregnancies but they happened less often. At 45 I had a miscarriage at nine weeks. After that we decided to use proper watertight contraception again because by that point we’d been trying for four years with nothing to show for it.

I was lucky to have two healthy children in my late 30s. Still don’t entirely regret what happened — IVF would have been very expensive and might well not have worked (we started trying when I had just turned 41). But if I hadn’t already had a second child, I would have wanted to be much more aggressive from the beginning.

Wow! Thank you I hadn’t thought of that… my husband has very very hot baths and takes pre workout daily, I just assumed the issue was with me as I’m a bit older than him but will definitely ask him to pause that for a while. Thanks for the encouragement!

Thank you, yes that is true and I think I’ll book in to see someone even just for some further advice. We have decided we don’t want to go down the IVF route I think, but we’ll see what happens.

Hello. First baby at 39 and second at 41. But I had two losses at age 40. After my first loss I saw a gynae and mentioned I was worried about being able to conceive again as it took 8 months when I was 38 to conceive the first. She prescribed letrozole for me that boosts ovulation.

I might be worth trying to find a gynae if you are concerned.

i nearly gave up after the second loss at its so tough now. My second baby (4th pregnancy) is now highly spirited 5 year old who I couldn’t be without.

I had miscarriage after miscarriage TTC baby number two at 41. I started taking nicotinamide (B3) supplements and three months later got pregnant with my healthy baby.

It could have been pure chance, but I think it helped.

I don’t know how reliable or trustworthy these sources are, but it seemed that the supplements were safe and already used for anti ageing and available over the counter. I also took melatonin which also seemed to be quite safe.

@Riverofhope
I had a chemical followed by a mc at 6 weeks, then 3 consecutive chemicals. I have a 2 year old son. I spoke to a fertility consultant during my review In January as id had an egg retrieval last summer and he wasnt concerned at all since ive successfully carried a child to term and he doesn't think 40 is old. He thought it was just bad luck. I fell pregnant that next cycle again .Everything looked fine at my scan. This is the furthest weve got 🤞 im hoping its a good sign

In my mid/late thirties I had three healthy babies and no miscarriages.
When TTC number 4 aged 39, I had three miscarriages before conceiving a healthy baby aged 40.
With healthy babies already, it was unlikely there was any cause for the recurrent miscarriages other than just dodgy eggs/sperm. It's not a coincidence that this happened far more to me when I was older. Statistically you are much more likely to have miscarriages after age 40.
But since you've recently had a child (I assume with the same partner, as that does make a difference) then by far the most likely cause is just that the overall percentage of dodgy eggs/sperm has increased. But there will still be healthy ones too! If you are emotionally able to keep trying, then chances are you'll get there.
I'd like to echo a pp about living healthily. I also tracked BBT so I was confident my hormones were behaving normally and that I was definitely ovulating each month.

Thanks for the encouragement! That sits right with me, I think we will just carry on trying. I don’t feel strongly enough to go down the IVF route, and we recently both had more tests done and all normal/strong so that’s positive.
