Can you conceive while partner is taking testosterone or anabolic steroids?

Can anyone help clear this up between me and my partner please…

Has anyone managed to get pregnant whilst their partner was taking testosterone and/or steroids?

He claims it’s all a myth that they make men infertile but I’m reading that taking either synthetic testosterone or steroids are literally a male contraceptive!

thanks in advance

Erm...

My question is shpuld you want to get pregnant by someone using anabolic steroids...

Statistically Male violence increases during pregnancy thats without roid rage...

SliceofTosst · 19/03/2026 19:34

Agree with pp.

I knew people who took them and they had a nasty streak. I could tell when they were on and off them by their personality.

Would avoid myself.

Summerhut2025 · 19/03/2026 19:42

Sorry I should have said we’re not trying to get pregnant. I’m just trying to inform him that it can make him infertile.

No issues with roid rage he takes low doses and cycles correctly, been together 5 years and no anger issues what so ever.

I’m not asking for people’s opinions on it I’m asking a simple question, has anyone on here got pregnant to someone while their partner was taking them? That’s it.

It isnt good for sperm quality at all. It can interfere with ttc if thats something you want to do in the future. It can also have effects on the size of the sacks and can shrink them with long term use which again can have issues with the quality of sperm or ejaculations.

Anabolic steroids reduce fertility and this may not be fully reversible by coming off them, especially if they've been used long term

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10841926/

Using testosterone for non-medical/ prescribed uses interferes with hormone signalling and may lead to long term fertility and erectile issues even after stopping. Additionally, animal studies show there may be impacts on the fertility of offspring.

Why do you want a relationship with someone who does that.

Wake up man millions of sports people and gym goers and fitness people take them, doctors prescribe testosterone to men because it drops when they’re 30 just like women take hrt. He’s not shooting up bloody heroin.

Anyway again it’s a simple question, has anyone got pregnant whilst they’re partner was taking them?

Thank you yes I’ve read the science. He thinks it’s a myth as he knows loads of men who have still fathered children who take them so I was curious to hear from any women.

What's the point of women's opinions if you know the science and he won't listen?

I'd leave him if you want kids. It might not happen due to his drug use and chances are gym will be prioritised over them, seeing as he prioritises it over his own health.

Ask a gym forum. But what’s the point. If as you say, millions of people are using it then it is inevitable you will find some to tell you “Yes, I got pregnant”.

So what? How does some rando on an anonymous forum help you in your situation. Bodies are different.

I knew a guy pinning for years. He died from a heart attack at 43.

rwalker · 20/03/2026 07:25

Yes you can still get pregnant
these 2 products lowers sperm production so obviously the actual change of you getting pregnant is significantly lower

one of the side effects is infertility but again that’s a possible side effect so it would be 50/50

I already have children thanks having no more and he’s a great dad to his daughter and his gym going doesn’t affect our relationship at all. I go with him sometimes. Just because he takes them doesn’t mean he is some beef neck who is obsessed by the gym, he is not the stereotype you are thinking of, many men aren’t who take them sensibly and aren’t looking to be a body builder.

So if he’s not wanting to be a body builder why on earth is he taking them?

Because they replace lost testosterone which to be honest is one of the reasons why men can be so lazy which women are always complaining about on here. They give you energy, enable you to train better and recover quicker. Men don't just take them to look like the Hulk, my partner doesn't look like that, he has an amazing toned body with nice sized muscles and literally zero fat! As they get older being able to train gets harder and harder due to lost testosterone and they pick up injuries easier which stops them from being able to train, it's just a boost. Not all men who take them are trying to be a body builder. I know that's the stereotype that people immediately think of but that really isn't the case for all men.

Also alcohol isn't 100% healthy, however people are fine drinking it in moderation. Same as steroids, they only become a real issue if you're abusing them.

It was literally a simple question lol. But I get others have to have their opinions. Personally I wouldn't take them myself but I understand why he does. It was a simple debate between me and him and I thought oh i'll ask Mumsnetters but then you just get the usual omg he must be a horrendous roid rage man LTB!!. Really, not the case.

Exactly this

GingerBeverage · 20/03/2026 09:52

I did a google search for you.

https://fertilitysolutions.co.uk/dont-use-anabolic-steroids/

The use of anabolic steroids has become one of the main causes of preventable male factor infertility. Increasing numbers of men, including teenagers, are now taking these steroids. They are sourced in the locker rooms, primarily gyms, to help build up muscle bulk in a bid to make themselves look more “manly”.
However, most are unaware of the side effects from these illegal drugs. They pose significant risks to their long term health, and more specifically their future fertility and sperm count. A lot of men believe they can reverse these effects with more hormones such as HMG, but this is not the case. These steroids can cause the testicles to shrink, stopping sperm production. This means that men taking anabolic steroids, and other drugs like them, may have problems starting or adding to their family in the future.
The science behind this is well known: The anabolic steroids increase testosterone production within the body. This helps build up muscle bulk. However, this also blocks the production of testosterone in the testicles themselves, which is a necessary ingredient for sperm production.
If used for long enough and in high enough doses, the damage to male fertility can become permanent. In some case, it may take up to a year for sperm production to return to normal after having stopped taking the anabolic steroids.
We are seeing an increasing number of men at the clinic who simply aren’t aware of the damage that taking anabolic steroids can do to their long-term health and fertility. If you have taken steroids either recently or even years ago, we advise that you get a semen analysis done to understand if your fertility has been affected.
If you are trying to start a family, now or wish to in the future, it is imperative that you look after your health. This means not taking off prescription drugs or “herbal” remedies of any sort without first consulting an expert. Eat well, exercise regularly and look after yourself.

There are lots of other articles. But if you really want to find women who have had babies from men using roids then reddit is a better option.

littlemisssunshine247 · 20/03/2026 11:40

It’s tricky @Summerhut2025sometimes yes, sometimes no. As I’m sure you know, taking artificial testosterone floods the body with so much that the body’s natural testosterone production shuts down, because it thinks ‘we’ve got plenty’. There are protocols used to try and bring it back (nolva/hcg etc) but the success depends on a number of factors including individual body, how long they’ve been taking steroids, are they doing a PCT after each blast, age etc.

Whilst I was reassured early on by reading bodybuilding forums where lots of men said they’d managed to get their other halves pregnant, it hasn’t been my experience and we had to turn to ivf after 5 years of trying naturally and with the fertility protocol. With semen samples 2 years apart, there was absolutely no sperm to count.

It may be worth having a semen analysis now and seeing where things stand if you would like a baby in the future.
