What tests to ask GP for

Hi all,
Sorry if this has been asked before and please feel free to link other threads with answers, searching via phone has not yielded any helpful results.

Basically, I just want to know what to expect and/or what tests to ask for when I visit GP in January re. Fertility.
Husband (32) and I (32) have been trying to conceive since June 2024 and I've hit my limit with the disappointment and more recently the ovwrwhelming sadness every time my period shows up.

Progesterone test for yourself, to check you ovulate (but make sure you know your cycle as it needs to be 7 days post ovulation, rather than standard day 21 which assumes a 28 day cycle with ovulation on day 14)
Semen analysis for your partner
Ultrasound scan for you

Those are the ones recommended by NICE guidelines
If all those are normal, next step would be to check your tubes are patent with a hycosy.

I'd also suggest getting AMH tested - it's not a strict test of fertility issues, but it tells you your ovarian reserve which is useful to know as pa t of any investigations.

Klmno · 14/12/2025 19:23

My GP refused to do amh but agree it's useful.
Not to tell you chance of natural conception but kind of to know how much time you have on your hands.
Btw I did Hertility tests and regret that as I think you can get them cheaper from other places like Medichecks etc. I feel like I wasted a bit of money with Hertility.
I'm sorry you are feeling sad. I was the same. It's really hard. We are now at two years and doing IVF. Hopefully it will happen naturally for you but either way it's good you are starting investigating, you might feel better with a plan xx

I really hope IVF works out for you. Thanks for sharing though as I have considered using Hertility too.
Best of luck xx

Thanks for taking the time to respond. I will definitely ask to include AMH.

I'd definitely shop around anyway if you do pay for any tests. I went straight for Hertility as saw them advertised but like randox etc appeared cheaper when I got some of them repeated.

You could ask your GP to check your thyroid but some will say it's not done as standard...I think worth ruling out though...maybe just say you've felt really tired or something too?!

Definitely get your partner to get tested asap as it may be a few months to wait for his - my partner had to go to the local hospital not just the GP surgery

Hey, if I was you I’d call and ask for them to be requested now as the tests will need to be done on specific days of your cycle if you want them done in January xx

I will look up NICE guidleines. Haven't heard of that before. Thank you for your response.
I really appreciate the help

Sorry you are going through this :( We were in the same boat 10 years ago and I remember how it felt.
Another vote for AMH test. 10 years ago we paid £40 for it but it showed my ovarian reserve was drastically reduced. That in itself didn’t get us referred for IVF (laparoscopy and hysteroscopy showed twisty tubes so we were referred then) but it helped explain why it was taking so long anyway.
Really hope it all works out for you x

I know when my appointment is booked for is about 3 days before my period would be due. Hoping that the appointment will be a discussion between GP and us and getting dates scheduled in person because the practice has a tendency to not book things in for 3 weeks when you call or schedule online. Open discussion is easier I think.
Appreciate the suggestion because that has been one of my concerns.

Oh wow. Didn't expect it would be months. Good to know.
Thanks for your advice

Just a quick update for anyone still following.
GP suggested a bunch of blood tests for me as first step and husband has been referred to a hospital for semen analysis we're still waiting for the actual appointment to be booked.
From what I can see in NHS app, all bloods came back normal and I have normal thyroid function.
Need to phone tomorrow to find out next steps. In terms of whether I can get AMH and ultrasound done

Renisenb · 20/01/2026 21:40

What happened with us was they then referred us to fertility who did other tests so that may be the pathway! Hope you are listened to xx

_nellie_ · 22/01/2026 13:18

I recommend your husband emailing the andrology department for his semen analysis to see if they have cancellations, it changed my husbands appointment from being a 3 months wait to a 4 week wait xx
