Blanket under the tree

I know it’s an old wives tale, I know it’s not going to make a baby appear, but… it’s a little cosy idea for DP and I to do after suffering a loss this summer. We’ve also got a lovely Tommy’s star for our tree.

So, the blanket… humour me… do we need to say/do anything or just wrap it and put it under the tree? Do we ever unwrap it? Do we add a new layer next year if it’s still just us? Or just leave it as is?

I've never heard of this one, but I really hope it works for you!

I did the blanket under the Christmas tree last year after two losses and ended up pregnant February 2025. Currently sitting with my third baby girl who is almost 4 weeks old 🙂I just wrapped it and put it under the tree and after Christmas I put it away and left it unwrapped untill I found I was pregnant again x

My next door neighbour did this for 10 years, blanket wrapped under the tree with dear xx love mum and dad. Every January it went away and every December it came back out. She’s currently 8 months pg and we couldn’t be more excited for them.
I didn’t know this was something people
did - I just thought it was her being optimistic/superstitious. It doesn’t harm anyone (although I guess for them it was possibly very upsetting getting it back out again every Christmas? She never said) so I don’t see a problem with doing it.

I had two early losses last year and then lost our baby boy at 19 weeks last September. I got the all clear to try again end of November and told my husband about this old wives tale. When I told him, he looked sheepish and pulled a present out from the back of the tree. It was beautifully wrapped with special paper and a ribbon. He’d heard the same tale.

I’m currently sitting here holding our second baby boy, who was born in August 7 weeks early.

I’m not saying it worked, but it was a sign between my husband and me that we still had hope. Good luck, OP.

Aw, this is making me well up.

Fingers crossed for you all.

I did this last year and got pregnant in March. Unfortunately lost that baby at 12 weeks and am still trying to fall again. This year I bought a new, gorgeous blanket and wrapped it under the tree, it gives me comfort and hope for a change and a better 2026

Try mistletoe too. Find a piece with lots of berries on it and keep it somewhere safe. My mum read about it and bought a piece, and I was pregnant in the Feb.

I am not one for this usually, but I was desperate so happy to give it a go... good luck!

SunshineAndRainbow37 · 20/12/2025 12:48

We’ve just done this, we just wrapped it up, both kissed it for good luck and placed it under the tree.
Sending you lots of luck✨

I've never heard of this but it sounds like a nice thing to do to symbolise hope. I'm quite relieved because without wishing to lower the tone, when I read the thread title I thought it was an old wives tale for a position to maximise conception (on a blanket under the tree) which I thought might be fraught with spikey interruptions 😂

Fallulah · 20/12/2025 19:01

Ahhh thanks all for not telling me I’m stupid! It is really a symbol of hope isn’t it?

We've got a lovely blanket. We just need to wrap it. I’m now also going mistletoe hunting!

We did this last year, I get pregnant in July, but MMC in Sept at 11 weeks so just started TTC again. Wondering whether to put it back under the tree again this year or get a new one

SleafordSods · 21/12/2025 09:15

It’s not something I’ve heard of either but it does sound lovely.
