Pregnancy tests with varying results

Hi,
I was due to start my period yesterday (Tuesday). I’m usually very regular, almost to the minute.
On Monday night, I wasn’t showing the usual signs so I took a pregnancy test which was a strong negative. Not even a faint line.
My period didn’t arrive yesterday so last I did another pregnancy tests and that time it was positive.
I’ve just done another test first thing this morning and it’s negative again. Again, not even a faint line.
Does anyone have any experience of this?

What tests are you using? Cheaper tests can sometimes leave a false positive due to an evap line or dye line and some just leave behind a very faint line even if its negative. I would try using a different test if you can.

Last night’s positive
This morning’s negative

Im not familiar with those tests sorry. Can you try a first response?

This mornings is also a positive. Some tests are more sensitive than other ones and I always found the strip ones very much so. Give it a day or two!

BudgetBuster · 05/11/2025 07:55

Do the tests you are using have different sensitivities?

I’m not sure to be honest.

The positive is from a very cheap multipack the second is Tesco.

I was due yesterday so I would assume a much stronger positive today if I was pregnant.

Worth trying again in a day or two though.

Is the blue strip one a one step test? If so, they’re very sensitive. If you stick to the same test you’ll get more consistency. Plus, even though your period is regular it doesn’t exactly predict ovulation date or even more so implantation date, and say the sensitivity of that strip test is under 10, and the sensitivity of the Tesco test is 25 (standard for ones that don’t purport to be early result) then your hcg could be normally increasing but as yet undetectable? I don’t mean to give false hope, more, it would be really strange to have a fairly bright postitive followed by a negative, and these are the things I would consider myself if it happened to me

Tesco tests have a sensitive of 25 which is pretty high. Imagine if you started off at 4 and it doubles every 2 days, it would take 3 days to show up on the Tesco test.

Lots of cheaper ones have sensitivity of 5 or 10.

Thank you everyone. The one I took on Monday was also one the cheap strip tests that are more sensitive. That was also a very definitive negative.
I’m thinking it’s most likely to be a chemical pregnancy maybe?
I will definitely retest in a few more days.

Good luck @Nocheezesforusmeeses I hope your next test will bring some clarity.

Can I just add that I’ve been singing the song ever since reading your username, it’s just the cutest darn thing in the world.

Thanks! It was another clear negative and I’m two days late now.
Maybe perimenopause (I’m 38)?

Well if it was a chemical then that would explain the delayed period. I don’t have clockwork periods (but am technically still regular) but they have been late without explanation in the past, and late from pregnancy too. I’m 39 with very low amh and still ovulate every month, so it would be very early for peri I would say, def more likely to be a hormonal disruption. Sorry you’ve been through it this month. Are you actively trying to conceive?

We aren’t. It would have been a case of failed contraception. I’ll make sure I’ve got plenty of sanitary supplies in my bag for work! It’s the rogue positive on Tuesday night that’s really thrown me. But I’m obviously not pregnant.

It’s so strange. Bloody hormones and lady bodies

Goodness yes, so strange. I’ve been through it with fertility and ivf and ttc, and it always comes down to—we basically don’t know that much about a woman’s body. Probably nice that there are still some mysteries in life, frustrating as they might be! Glad you’ve got the result I’m assuming you wanted. Failed contraception is no joke!
