TSH/ prolactin

Hi all,

I’m new into the TTC journey and have had some results back from a recent blood test ;

Serum TSH level:
4.55 mIU/L

Serum prolactin level:
753 mIU/L

does anyone know if this is okay to TTC and would it prevent me from getting pregnant ?

I have not been diagnosed with hypothyroidism as my T3 and T4 are in range ,

has anyone had any success in conceiving with similar levels?

Thank you ,

My friend was told they wouldn't do an IVF embryo transfer with TSH over 2.5 due to the increased risk of miscarriage. So while I think yours are counted as normal in general, they are high for trying to get and stay pregnant.

TSH is technically probably in range for a normal person but definitely too high for wanting to conceive. If the gp won’t do anything then see if you can get an appointment with a reproductive endocrinologist. Unfortunately it might mean paying privately. My gp just didn’t know enough about thyroid levels and TTC to help me after I suffered several losses and I paid for the above privately. I am diagnosed hypothyroid with hashimotos so really needed to get my thyroid level within a good range. As pp said under 2.5

High prolactin can interfere with fertility as it suppresses oestrogen and can stop ovulation, it can be a side effect of medication or a symptom of a prolactinoma. If it is this, It can be treated fairly simply with medication to lower and restore cycles. This medication is then stopped if you get a positive pregnancy test. Prolactinomas are not very common and many gps are unaware, so it would be worth seeing an endocrinologist. 758 is not super high so don’t panic! but definitely worth investigating :) good luck!

It’s controversial on here but I’d recommend trying agnus castus (vitex). I had higher prolactin than you and slightly lower TSH and it made AC made a huge difference for me. Improved follicular phase length, masses more fertile cervical mucus, and pregnancy. Twice. AC has been shown in trials to impribe thyroid function and reduce prolactin. Try it at a lowish dose (not those insane 1000 mg pills, get ones at 80-200 mg) for a month or two and if you don’t see any improvements in your cycle and fertility signs you can stop.

Ugh sorry for typos

Thank you for all your responses!

Im currently 7DPO so I think I’m going to wait until I can take a pregnancy test and then I will book in with an endocrinologist if it’s negative,

I had an ultrasound 2 days before ovulation which showed that everything looked good and I had a mature follicle waiting to drop, I had all the usual signs EWCM and positive LH surge so I’m hoping I did ovulate 🙏

it’s scary what you read online about TSH and conception and pregnancy, especially when the GP does not seem concerned ..

Agree with the posters above - my TSH was tested as part of a routine check before our first IUI attempt (same sex couple) and came back as 3.2. Normal for my age bracket (so not diagnosed with hypothyroidism) but the clinic wouldn’t proceed with the IUI until it was brought below 2.5 so I was prescribed Levothyroxine. Thankfully fell pregnant on our second IUI attempt but was told to keep taking Levothyroxine throughout the pregnancy with regular TSH blood tests and reviews by a NHS endocrinologist. Currently awake feeding my 10 week old 😊 (and could stop taking the Levothyroxine when he was 2 weeks old).

I think high prolactin can affect TSH? that’s what my endocrinologist said. So I would look at the prolactin first. Im not medical but I have personal experience of both. I would see an endocrinologist in the first place.

Thanks for this info about Angus Catus, how long did it take for you to see a difference in your prolactin and TSH? Were you on any medication for your thyroid or prolactin ?
