Hi everyone .
I have extremely heavy periods which wipe me out - my gp has recommended a coil or the mini pill ( desogestrel). Has either of these worked in reducing bleeding for anyone ? Or any other methods helped ? I really don’t fancy the coil if I’m honest x

For me the pills didn't work, but data shows they do, sometimes people need to try a few first which works well with them. The mirena coil for me has reduced bleeding on the whole, I have and still do use tranexamic acid, you can could try that first as that massively reduces bleeding, it works very well if you take it diligently.

Otherwise I think the mirena coil can be a great option, it works by mimicking the luteal phase and thining the uterus lining and thus you have less bleeding and cramps, it has done that for me but I will say it took a while for me. For me it took much longer than it typically does for people, and for pain relief make sure you get it all.

If you don't want to jump for the mirena, try a pill for a while, give it 4-6 weeks and see how it goes. You could try another then or reevaluate whether you'd try the coil. But tranexamic acid and northisterone, are both effective as well, if you don't want to go the hormonal route.

The normal combined pill changed my periods from being heavy and very painful to light, short and painless. Plus the added bonus of being able to postpone or skip a period due to holidays, event etc, with no other effects.
