Positive test but bleeding before? And hospital closed for bank holiday

I’m not sure what to do. I had some light bleeding / sludge around the time of my period and so I assumed that we just hadn’t conceived. But today, a week later I noticed I had sore boobs and lo and behold there is a big dark double line on a test. I was a bit worried about the bleeding and period pain I had but I missed the hospital EPU by an hour. And obviously now they’re shut for the bank holiday until Tuesday.

Did anyone else experience bleeding around the time of their period? It was very light; only requiring a panty liner and then a full pad for half a day but I did get what felt like period pain. Not as bad as usual but I definitely had to take Paracetamol throughout the half day.

I’m not sure if it was a chemical pregnancy and the test is just still showing the hormone or I really am. With everything being closed, I don’t really know what to do with my thoughts. What practical action would you take - if any?

No personal experience but I’ve read it’s very, very common to get a bit of bleeding when your period was meant to come. Hopefully that’s all there will be and you can have a relaxing pregnancy!

Thanks. I’ve since heard that from a few friends too, but the NHS sites all go to quite an extreme recommendation which is to go to A&E? Surely not. I don’t feel unwell or in pain anymore. Feel like I’m in this strange limbo where I don’t even know if it’s viable anymore (acutely conscious that one in four early stages don’t progress) and yet the test is positive. I’m almost wondering – what now?

How heavy was the bleeding? Has it stopped now? The best thing to do is to get hcg bloods done and then get them repeated. I hope its all ok. It can honestly go either way. Iv had bleeding in early pregnancy and the pregnancy continue to a live birth and others end in a loss. Blood work will give you the best indication on how things are going.

MrsGreenHag · 23/08/2025 12:17

Do nothing. There’s absolutely nothing A&E or EPU can do this early.

It’s just a wait and see situation.

MamaElephantMama · 23/08/2025 12:18

Wait it out unfortunately. EPU won’t see anyone in my area under 6 weeks.

Overthebow · 23/08/2025 12:19

It’s not A&E unless you’re losing a lot of blood. At this early stage there’s nothing they’d be able to do, so you just need to wait and see what happens over the next week. It could be that it was just some implantation bleeding.

sellotape12 · 23/08/2025 14:31

Ok good to know, thanks, plus the hospital isn’t particularly close where we live so don’t fancy the trek. This wait is both infuriating and annoying huh. Plus we live next to a nursery school so the noises of babies is sending me crazy. Anyway thanks all

Just to add my experience here.

I had implantation bleeding with both of my successful pregnancies.
I didnt even know it was a thing before then.

I did have 1 mc at around 8 weeks and that was a couple of weeks of on and off bleeding, a scan at epu at 6 weeks that was reassuring at the time, but I went on to mc at 8 weeks.

I had a chemical in between the successful pregnancies, and for me, if I wasn't ttc and testing early, I wouldn't have ever knows I was briefly pregnant, I would have just thought it was AF a few days late.

All this to say, your experience sounds more like implantation bleeding, as you have not gone on to have a full bleed.
Good luck!

@Foodylicious thanks so much for your perspective and for sharing your experiences. I’m so sorry about the MC. What we women go through honestly. I’m so glad you were able and lucky in the end.

How are you getting on @sellotape12 , are your tests still positive?

sellotape12 · 26/08/2025 13:55

Yes, the test is still positive and I have an early scan on Friday. I’m so nervous. I don’t have any symptoms other than sore boobs even though I’ld be about five weeks. Also on Friday my toddler will be with me. I really want my husband to be at the early scan, but our child will be with us too. Has anyone been in this position? We don’t have family nearby.

I can’t think straight. It’s either: be alone in scan whilst my husband looks after our toddler, or we’re all together, but that would be weird for my child to witness? Or do we just pay for Nursery for an extra half day?

@sellotape12 I hope everything goes okay!

is the scan with nhs or private?
if nhs id check if you can even bring your toddler as in my experience they didn’t allow children in the early pregnancy unit at all.

toddler likely wouldn’t know what’s going on but might be a bit bored / not keep still (at least I know mine wouldn’t 😂) so it might be worth putting them in nursery anyway
whatever works for you

good luck 🤞
