Multiple Miscarriages Experiences (age 40+)

I've just had my 2nd missed miscarriage in 12 months confirmed by an ultrasound clinic. I've also had 2 chemical pregnancies.

I have just turned 40.

I have one child conceived naturally quite easily in 2022, but we have been trying for a 2nd for 18 months and have been hit with 4 losses.

I am losing hope. Has anyone had a similar experience and you managed to conceive in the end?

We are moving to IVF but I can't help but feel like that won't work either.

Thanks in advance for any replies ❤️

I am so sorry to hear about your experience of MMC. It happened to me three times in a row beginning when I was 38 and going on until I was 40. I well remember the shock and the sadness at the time. I had never heard of a missed miscarriage and assumed that a miscarriage involved bleeding. I lost hope of ever having a baby, but I became pregnant for a fourth time and gave birth to a healthy baby when I was 41.

As you will know, they won’t do any firm of testing until your third miscarriage. I found out that the pregnancy was lost due to a random genetic problem. I think that this was also true of my first miscarriage. At the time they told me to keep trying in the hope that I would eventually beat the odds - which I found really hard.

There is a book by Prof Lesley Regan ‘Miscarriage’ . I found this really helpful as she provides information on the odds of experiencing a healthy pregnancy even after multiple miscarriages.

Another thing that I found helpful was to join the Miscarriage Association. At the time they published a newsletter that always contained some good news stories. I literally used to highlight these, as they gave me hope.

This was so incredibly helpful. I didn't know about the book by Prof Regan or the miscarriage association.

Your journey sounds like a long one and I'm sorry you had to go through this, but that happy ending gives me hope. Thank you.

I’m 36 but went through multiple (4) misscarriages before finally having DS.

i did have the misscarraige investigations with the nhs but to be honest they were very basic and found nothing wrong, they wouldn’t check DH and said I wasn’t eligible for ivf and to just keep trying (that phone call was a real kicker on an awful 3 year ttc journey!)

we went for a private misscarraige investigation consultant, cost £250 and was the best money we spent, it was just a chat and as I am sure you will have been I had been googling/mumsnetting/reading everything I could but it was so helpful to actually tell a professional my individual story and have his suggestions on what would be the next best step. He recommended progesterone suppositories for my from my next BFP (based on my history of 2 mmc, one mc and one chemical he thought that was the most likely cause) and amazingly it worked!

so sorry you are going through this and sending you so much luck

Hi, I’m so sorry to read your story. I know a woman who experienced multiple miscarriages at 37 and struggled to conceive her second child. It took her over three years to get pregnant again. I’m not an expert, but have you considered doing additional tests or consulting a specialist? Sometimes the causes can include declining ovarian reserve, which is one possible reason for pregnancy loss, or even high levels of stress.
Aside from the book already recommended above, It Starts with the Egg is an excellent resource. You might also find helpful information on MyIVFAnswers, especially in their section on miscarriages. Best of luck
