Negative and Positive HyCosy Experiences

I have had two HyCosys which were both very different experiences and wanted to share. I have seen some awful stories on here which aren’t great to read when trying to prepare, and although one of my experiences was awful, the other one was very positive.

i had been trying for my daughter for 2 years with no luck, we had all the tests done and I was sent for a HyCosy. I didn’t really know what to expect, it says you may have some mild cramping during the procedure, so I wasn’t prepared for the intense cramping that hit me. As they injected the dye, I was in awful pain, not to scare anyone but I did nearly faint. I had a blockage in one of my tubes so the pressure build up was very painful. The fluid did eventually flush through to my ovaries. I had the procedure on 8 July 2022, and my daughter was conceived on 3 august 2022!

i have since then been trying for 10 months for baby number two with no luck, and after consulting with my doctor he advised getting another HyCosy just to make sure all ok. I had been absolutely dreading the procedure, anxiety was through the roof, I was preparing for another painful procedure, but it was the complete opposite. I had my most recent one at kings fertility, the nurses were lovely and made me feel at ease. I had some cramping when the catheter was inserted, but felt virtually nothing when they flushed the saline/dye. Thankfully they told me the tubes are open and there are no blockages.

For anyone having a HyCosy, please don’t get too hung up on the “horror stories”, there are so many positive stories on here, focus on them. 80% of women have a tolerable procedure.

Thank you for this.

I’m hoping to have one but could do with recommendations in/near Leeds. I don’t know anyone whose had it done so appreciate the heads up x

@Sammy2704 id imagine the first one was bad because you were blocked, the second one wasn’t because you weren’t blocked?
Im getting it done and I’m really nervous. I will be taking painkillers beforehand, just have to decide which ones, I’m going to have to google which are the strongest.

I don't want to add to the bad stories so no details, just wanted to add I had no blockage so that women who experience pain don't immediately think there is something wrong.

@Sammy2704 my letter said there may be discomfort so take some painkillers before hand, I did but even as I did it I thought it was bollocks. You wouldn't take two paracetamol then think you could stick a needle in your hand and not feel it. I mentioned to the nurse afterwards and she rolled her eyes and agreed, said to get something prescribed with a sedative effect from the doc if I ever needed something similar - see if you can?

Sorry I meant @Clara202 in the above, it won't let me edit.

I hope it goes well for you, try to remember that's its short term then gone.

Sammy2704 · 28/05/2025 08:04

@Clara202 I took 2 paracetamol and 2 ibuprofen 60 minutes before. The pain relief is for the cramping that you can experience for a bit after the procedure, which definitely helped. If there is any blockages or build up then there may be some intense cramping, but you can tell them to stop at any point if it’s too much.

Just remember, giving birth to a child is a completely different level! If you want a baby then this will be a walk in the park trust me.

You’ve got this!

@Sammy2704 I keep telling myself that but in childbirth I’d get an epidural and a baby at the end of it 😅 I’m sure I’ll be fine. I have read a lot of stories of people almost passing out etc and while it hasn’t helped my anxiety I feel it’s better to be prepared. I will take ibuprofen and perhaps solpadeine before mine. By the sounds of things regular paracetamol is not the one for this procedure!

Just wanted to add that I had a HyCosy this cycle and it was completely fine. I took nurofen half an hour or so beforehand and had some mild discomfort and that was it. I couldn't get the coil in years ago as I found it too painful so was dreading it but it was much better than I imagined.

I have my ultrasound in 20mins and my hycosy next week.

i only got my peak OPK this morning too 🫠🫠🫠🫠🫠😩

shit timing! I don’t think an early pregnancy test would pick up if I was before my hycosy 😓

in total limbo rearranging it, we had a lot of BDing Sat-Monday too x

Clara202 · 28/05/2025 16:05

@SCK2024 rearrange the Hycosy to be on the safe side. The timing is unfortunate but it’s not worth the risk.

I thought exactly this, even more so now after the ultra sound she said there is a dominant egg ready for release any time in the next few hours/day, so my peak OPK was correct.

Both ovaries absolutely fine and normal and 7 follicles on each side.

Just got to catch my OH before he goes on his nights now 😅
