Possible to miss LH surge with opk sticks?

Tinasan · 20/05/2008 07:44

I've been using CB digital opk sticks all week to try to detect my fertile time but they've all been negative. I feel like I have been fertile (ewcm, lower abdominal twinges) but I'm now on CD 13 of a 24-25 day cycle. Feel very despondent and maybe I shouldn't have bought the blimmin things in the first place! Is it possible to miss the surge with these things, or should I buy another packet in case I'm going to ov late? The instructions tell you to use morning wee, but a quick google has brought up loads of sites that say not to - so have I wasted the whole kit (and £23 ?) Any advice would be appreciated, I have never used anything like this before and I thought it would make life easier not harder! Thanks.

I seem to remember sometimes the surge is only for a short time and you may have to do them at least twice a day if you are going to catch the LH surge (I think I compromised and only did them twice a day during the period I thought I might be ovulating.)

By the way there are some very cheap sticks on the internet that cost only pennies each, so if you have a long cycle or are going to be using them for a while it might be better to order some of those. I used accessdiagnostics although there might be other suggestions in mumsnet messages.

Also if you don't already have it, the Toni Weschler book 'Take charge of your fertility' (or something like that) is very comprehensive on charting your cycle using other methods - but I have to say the body temp thing never suited me due to frequent night-time interruptions from the kids.

Tinasan · 20/05/2008 08:11

Thanks - I wish that CB told you to do it twice in the instructions! I'd better get the cheap tests - perhaps I'm not ovulating at all?

I used Persona as a contraceptive - I got pregnant.

I have used OPK sticks to try and track my ovulation - they didn't show positive.

I used my bodies other ov signs to get pregnant, and bingo I was pregnant the first month.

So, I think I can safely say that OPK sticks are not for me. However, some people do find them helpful.

I can really recommend a book called Taking Charge of Your Fertility. It explains what happens during your cycle, what signs to look out for, and how to chart. It's quite a big book, but don't be daunted it covers some subjects that aren't applicable to all (ie fertility issues with PCOS, breastfeeding, menopause etc)

Good luck xx

Thanks ILTMIMI - I hope I'm like you and it's not showing up rather than I'm not ovulating. I got pregnant immediately with my DC so I've never really thought about all these things, but now we are TTC again and my DH is away a lot, so I thought it would be better to get organised and know the peak times to try. Think I will buy that book today.

Has anyone else have bad experiences with ovulation tests? I'm really disappointed as it says on the box that it's 99% accurate, and I did follow the instructions properly. I'm very worried now that my fertility has decreased a lot now since my DC was born (I was 32 then, now 34)

Tinasan, like you I tried the sticks and spent a fortune. Hardly ever saw a surge. I was trying for my third - and after three years I got fed up. I then bought the ClearBlue digital ovulation kit. This looks for more than just the LH surge and actually gives you 4 or 5 days that you are more fertile. Used it once and fell pregnant straight away. It is expensive - but nothing compared to what the sticks alone cost me. It turned out that I ovulated right near the end of my cycle, nothing like the 14 day norm - so my surge was constantly being missed. Good luck.

Just a thought, you may find one cheaper on Ebay and then you can buy the sticks new.

Tinasan · 20/05/2008 17:05

Thanks NooBee, it's good to know that they don't work for everyone. Think I'll wait until next cycle (unless by some miracle I am pregnant anyway) and then try the ovulation kit or some cheap sticks...

I bought cheapo sticks off Ebay and got nothing after testing mid morning for 2 months then noticed when looking at photos of test sticks on peeonastick.com that the tester had written 10 and 11pm at night on them so since then tested after 9pm and got a line last 2 months.

Its more than possible to miss the surge, some womens surge only lasts a few hours. I poas yesterday morning and got a neg, it was positive at 5pm and negative again this morning so if i had only used FMU i would have missed it completly.

I have used both ebay one step opks and a cbfm and find the cheap ebay strips more reliable and a lot cheaper ( £2 a month as opposed to £20 !) although there is something really reassuring about seeing that little egg on the cbfm or the smiley face on the sticks isnt there !

Tinasan · 20/05/2008 18:46

Thanks HC & WM that's really interesting. I wish that the instructions on the CB packet indicated that it was possible to miss the surge, but I guess that would not make the sales of their product any easier! I was really looking forward to seeing the smiley face thing on the sticks, felt really rubbish when I'd used all the sticks and still got nothing. Think will tell dh we need to keep doing it every night this month anyway, just in case...

When during the day did you test?

I have used the cb digi and I loved it.

I tested twice a day for 3 days that I suspected I might get a surge.

You have to test with pm urine rather than am urine. Am never gave me the but pm did.

Or you may simply not have O'd yet and your cycle will therefore be longer this month

Squack · 20/05/2008 20:53

Oh and you need only buy the digi opk once, the persona sticks will work with the device, although that's another thing the cb instructions won't tell you.

Btw the instructions do say to use afternoon wee, or at least mine did.

Argh! [rummages in the bin to retrieve the CB device thigmabob] - thanks very much Squack!

The instructions said and I quote "you should test at the same time of day - many women prefer to test first thing in the morning". So that's what I did for most of it, am really peed of now. Either I've missed it, it's still to come or I'm having a whatsit cycle that you don't ovulate...still will go and buy some persona sticks tomorrow, at least it won't be another 23 quid

I know how frustrating all of this is. I started using ovulation sticks two months ago and didn't get any positive results between days 8-13 of a 27/28 day cycle. I had success in the second month, I tested positive on days 6/7 which was a revelation to me as I assumed that I would be mid cycle. Try testing earlier, i am using the really cheap ovulation sticks that you get through access diagnostics.

I understand your despondancy, it often feels as though you are exhausting every avenue and wearing yourself down in to the bargain

Best of luck

SweetieDarling · 20/05/2008 22:22

It's probably been asked before lots of times but where do you buy the Clearblue FM and the Persona sticks from on the high street and how much do they cost approx? How does the fertility monitor work (not the theory, I mean what do you actually do?(is it a machine?)
Am on cycle 1 at the moment but might try this for next month (am assuming won't have BFP this month due to much cramping so AF prob on way)

SweetieDarling · 20/05/2008 22:33

Cookiemg - timid question here and at risk of making myself look stupid but bear with me - I thought ov happened "averagely" between days 12-16 prior to the first day of your following AF so in a 27-28 day cycle (lets say 28) you would also be ov between cd 12-16 iyswim? To make myself clearer (more confusing!) imagine it was a 34 day cycle then the ov phase would be cd 18 to cd 22 (VERY averagely) ie 12-16 days before the next AF.

If cycle day 1 is the first day of AF, wouldn't cd8 be too early to ov or is this your particular cycle? Or have I just misunderstood (highly likely ) I am also ttc so am soaking up all info!!

Bimblin · 20/05/2008 22:50

I used the test trips for two months, and used strips (nearly every day it seems!) and was gutted to not (appear to) ovulate at all. Maybe I did them the wrong days. Went to gp about no periods (previously irregular) and not ovulating. Discovered that I was pg, and later dates made it clear that I'd got pg the day my period was due rather than on the typical fertile window. When I mentioned this to my consultant he said the strips are rubbish. And v expensive. So maybe other forms of predicting are better for some people.

Tinasan · 21/05/2008 07:35

SweetieDarling - what Cookiemg said is entirely possible, it is a myth that everyone ovulates around the 'average' time. With my DD, I conceived on day 10 of a 29 day cycle (I know cos DH was away the rest of the month). Cookiemg - I started testing on day 6 because I thought I might ov early again (and my cycle has shortened since I had my first baby) but still didn't get a positive. Interesting what Bimblin says - maybe I'll just forget all about these sticks, and just keep checking the ewcm etc. Anyone know anything else you can look out for? (apart from temping, I am not organised enough to do that every morning). Good luck to everybody else that is ttc

The best way to tackle it if you don't have irregular/very long cycles is to chart for a month or 2.

This allows you to note down your cervical position-it will go higher and softer as you approach O.

It allows you to note your cervical mucous- this will become more abundant and have the texture of egg white, all stringy and stretchy.

It allows you to note any cramping which can indicates imminent or actual release of the egg.

AND you chart your basal body temperature (taken before you get out of bed in the morning, after 3 hours uninterrupted sleep, and vaginally produces a more reliable result). When you get a clear shift in temperature you can be fairly certain (in a normal cycle) that you have O'd.

OPK's should be started about 5 days before you think you Ovulate and afternoon urine should be used. I usually test at between 6-8pm.
If you, like me, usually ovulate on cd17-18, I would test at 2pm & 8pm from cd15 onwards.
I'm rarely earlier than cd17 and know my cycle rather well, I therefore feel I can afford to test quite close to my O date.
The digi ones are imho the very best because they take the guess work out of OPK's completely. Either a yes/no, no interpretation needed.

Persona sticks are available in Boots and cost £9.99 per pack of 8 sticks. Ebay may sell them cheaper, as do a site called blushingbuyer.com, where I tend to buy about 4 boxes at a time. Delivery iirc is free and they work out a lot cheaper than Boots. Other chemists will likely sell them I would've thought.

The clear blue monitor and the persona are both small computerised devices which log info they receive from requested urine tests which you insert into the monitor on days where this is requested. They are essentially the same thing, except Persona is designed to be a contraceptive device and so will give green days (non-fertile), red days (likely to be fertile) and O signed days (Ovulation is likely in the next 12-24 hrs).
Essentially you would use Persona in the reverse and have sex on the red days & def on the O ones (it actually is a little egg sign).

The cb is the same but gives readings of low fertility, high fertility and peak fertility, but it all means the same thing.

They both have hefty price tags of around £70 new and will take about 3 cycles to recognise accurately your cycle.
You can buy these devices on ebay for a lot cheaper, sometimes MN'ers sell them. The data needs to be reset though before you use them.

Charting is free and will do the same thing, with the added bonus of enabling you to get rather more acquainted with your body than you maybe already are.
it can become a little obsessive though so be warned!

I have charted for 2 months after stopping bcp and have now stopped as I'm sure I O when I do. It's served it's purpose for me.

I'm maybe going to use the cb digi this month, haven't decided yet.

LP's of between 11-15 days are the most common lengths. Anything below 11 is less desirable because the egg may stand less of a chance of successful implantation if the lining is preparing to shed for menstruation.
IME an LP longer than 15 days is also unusual.
When charting 18 high temps (above coverline) is usually considered a sign of pregnancy.

I'll reiterate though OPK's charting etc is NOT for those with irregular cycles/pcos. persona is no use for those with long cycles either.

Update!!! After all the negative results with the opk sticks, I've just had a positive pregnancy test! I can't believe it!!! I'm on CD26 and the result came up really fast on a Clearblue Digital, so I think I must have ovulated early, as normal, so must have ovulated when I was testing. Just wanted to let those know who might have been getting similar negative results on the sticks - perhaps they don't work for everybody! (right - am off to try to work out my due date )
