Negative test, then period and now positive result

Hi all

I’m wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation to me. My last period was a day or so late so I tested for pregnancy and there was not even a hint of a line. I then came on my “period” which was pretty much normal - definitely more than just a bit of spotting which I know can indicate implantation bleeding.

Cut to this next cycle and I take ovulation tests which show a dark line for a few days in a row which I thought was strange. So I then take a pregnancy test which is now showing as positive.

I’m just not sure what to make of this as if I was pregnant before I don’t understand why I would have negative tests and the bleed. My concern is it’s ectopic but as I have no other symptoms (no bleeding currently or any pain) do I just wait it out?

Thanks so much in advance for any comments!

I would go get your bloods checked and see where your hcg is at. How dark is your bfp? Have you got a photo by any chance? I'd say track hcg which will give you an indication of what could be going on, wait a couple of weeks and go for a scan to see of everything is in the right place.

@Miraclemuma03 thanks so much for your response. I’ve added a photo of the test from yesterday and this morning. Would I ring the GP to get bloods? My experience with them is they aren’t really interested/it’s very hard to get an appointment!

@LoJack they are very dark tests. Definitely find a doctor who is willing to show an interest in your care. I'd say you need at least 2 bloods. One to see where your hcg is at which might give you a rough indication of how many weeks you are and a second to see if it is rising correctly. You might even get away with getting an ultrasound in around 2 weeks to check location and you might be lucky to be able have measurements done to give you rough estimate of gestation.

@Miraclemuma03 ok thanks, I’ll see what I can do. The added complication to this is that we’re meant to be going abroad for a few days on Thursday but now I’m not sure whether to go on the trip!

You can still go on your trip. Flying is OK during pregnancy. In all honesty you don't have to do anything until you get back from your trip.. I'd just say no alcohol and watch what your eating and where your eating it from.. all your tests can be done when you get back since it's only for a couple of days. You do what you feel comfortable doing but your in no rush either way.

This happened to me twice, on my second and third ectopics, so it would definitely be worth getting your HCG levels checked out or perhaps a private scan if possible. For reassurance though, each time my doctors told me it was pretty rare to still have a period when pregnant with an ectopic, so it’s not the norm.

@lemonyfox thanks for your response and sorry to hear you went through a few ectopics! Can I ask how/when you found out the pregnancies weren’t where they should be?

@LoJacksure, each one was different!

1st - missed period, negative tests, started passing huge clots. Ectopic identified at 10 weeks since last period. Slow rising HCG levels.

2nd - normal period, HCG tests after period showed positives, ruptured around 8 weeks. Slow rising HCG levels.

3rd - normal periods but this time I was testing post-period and started with positive HCG tests again afterwards, had normal doubling HCG levels with this one weirdly.

lemonyfox · 11/05/2025 12:25

Oh and the 3rd one I went to EPU at 4 weeks given my history, but with the normally doubling HCG levels they didn’t officially diagnose ectopic until around 6 weeks.

LoJack · 11/05/2025 13:06

@lemonyfox thanks so much for sharing that with me, it’s helpful to see other people’s experiences. I guess that my concern is if it is ectopic it could rupture suddenly whilst I’m out of the country. Did you have any other symptoms or did it happen suddenly?

No symptoms at all with each one I’m afraid!
