DH is 32 and I’m 27. No kids yet. Can’t decide whether to come off contraception in a few months and TTC or to wait to TTC until summer next year. We’ve been married for over 3 years and we own a home with a mortgage. Basically we have car loan that won’t be paid off (about 500 per month) until spring 2027. I don’t think my work will offer maternity pay so I’d be on about 300 per week statutory maternity pay for 6 months (not in UK) and unpaid if I decided to take an extra 4 months. I pay about 500 towards our mortgage and we were thinking if we waited until the car loan was paid off, DH could allocate that 500 to cover my mortgage payment. From anyone who’s been in a similar situation did you go ahead or wait a bit longer? Was it a financial stretch? We’re saving separately and will probably buy most of the big stuff before I’d actually have to go on mat leave and while I’m still earning my full wage. I’m happy to wait but more conscious of DH age being five years older than me, and the fact we’d want more than one child. We’d also like to go to Japan next year so there’s that! Just looking for some pearls of wisdom really!

I would wait 1 more year. I had my first at 29 and could have waited til 30 and had one more year of holidays or bars or saving up money

Thank you!

In those circumstances I would wait another year to get rid of the car finance payments.

I’d just go ahead now. I had my first at 29 and it was a good age but I’d have liked to have started just a bit younger.

Having young kids will always be a stretch financially but the sooner you start the sooner you’re out the other side!

Also you can never be sure you will be able to conceive easily, hopefully all will be fine but it’s impossible to know until you start trying.

Could take literally years of TTC. I would start straight away. People would probably have thought we started too soon but 18 months later I'm glad we did.

If you’re 100% certain that you want a child, I wouldn’t wait. There are no guarantees on how long it will take to conceive.

Off my experience I wouldn't wait.

It's always a stretch with money having children, and it will be for the rest of your life 😅

Agreed! Don’t wait , it could take a while to conceive so when finally having a child your loan could be paid off. Either way you’ll make it work, it’s better than leaving it too late and then wishing you’d done it sooner. X

I would say it depends on if you would like more than one child and what sort of age gap.

Fertility drops after 30 snd more after 35

Imagine it takes two years to conceive no 1

There is no perfect time 😬

Agree with this!
