Embryo transfer question

In the past I’ve had 3 failed transfers (all FET) and have some frozen embryos still in storage . Now that I’m over 40 can I have more than one transferred or do they go by the age I was when the embryos were frozen ? I’m a bit confused !

Hi @fertilityquestions I'd imagine this will be dependent on your specific clinic policies and your own health, probably worth a discussion? Think about; how comfortable are you with the prospect of carrying, and raising twins? Financial implications as well. I'm in a similar situation; have 2 remaining embryos frozen together in the same straw; I'm 39 so considering what to do as I only want to do 1 more transfer, but terrified at the prospect of twins, but I already have a boisterous IVT toddler! Best of luck but your clinic is your best bet 👍

My clinic said they base it on egg quality once you hit 40. I have had 5 failed so far and they have said my 6th could be a double, purely due to reoccurring failed transfers. I have decided against it as my remaining two FETs are still funded and the thought of twins terrifies me! I'm sure you can state you want 2 transferred.

Given my past failures (even with day 5 embryos) I think I’m going to ask for a double transfer this time

I think it will depend on your consultant. I was told that multiple embryo transfers aren't recommended for women over 40 die to the higher risk of a multiple pregnancy at that age. I was only 'allowed' a single transfer. Might be different where you are though! Good luck x

You can request a DET and most clinics will discuss this in a unit meeting with consultants, embryologists etc.
There will be a number of factors considered, including age, history, and embryo quality - the better quality the embryos, the less likely they will allow for DET.
Best of luck with everything!
