Infertility referral

Hello

We have an appointment at our hospital's fertility clinic tomorrow, first appointment after a referral from the GP for infertility - just wondered if anyone could share any experiences of what to expect or anything we should be asking and should look out for?

Thanks in advance

Unfortunately can’t advise as haven’t had one, but do you mind me asking how long it took from gp referral to appointment? Hope it goes well ☺️

Hi @CirclePanda where are you based? Each NHS area tends to be slightly (and sometimes wildly) different on their approach/timescales etc.

Good luck on your journey and I hope it ends with a positive result.

What tests have you already had done? That will make a difference. Some clinics ask GPs to check the basics, some want to do it all themselves.
It was a long time ago now for me but I’d had bloods done already, I was sent for a vaginal ultrasound and an HSG (to check my tubes) and sent H for a sperm analysis. Then brought back to clinic to discuss the results.

We had an interview with a nurse:

  • checking our medical history and the cause of our infertility
  • if my smear test is up to date
  • info about travelling to exotic countries and diseases than you could catch there
  • book a sperm test for my partner
I suppose it goes differently depending on your case but there is nothing scary.

I had a follicles count (intra vaginally echography), blood test and weight and height.
My husband just had blood test.

It took about 1 hour in total.

Thank you all for the replies. It took about 6 months from GP referral @Muddysocks1
We are in the Borders so not sure how this compares but this was quicker than we expected. Had bloods and partner's semen analysis done by GP already. Hope you had a positive outcome @Mouche85 and others in the same boat. It's not much fun is it 😅

Our tests are all positive so far. We are in the Newcastle clinic.

Waiting for our review with the doctor now.

Our first appointment was some general health questions then the nurse arranged an ultrasound, bloods on day 7 and 21, an HSG and sperm analysis for DH.

Good Luck. Our follow up was scheduled for March this year but we conceived the month after the HSG and currently 9 weeks pregnant. I’m almost certain it ‘cleared things out’. Hope all goes well for you!

I just had my first appointment this week too.

My partner gave a sample last week and we received his results, answered questions (general health and history) and discussed likely next steps with the doctor, and then I had bloods taken.

I was specifically referred due to suspected PCOS though so had already had ultrasounds and bloods via the GP (although the bloods were a while ago, hence the repeat). I received a call two days after my appointment with a confirmation of PCOS and a prescription for provera and letrazole.

I had a few months (I was told up to 6, but it was about 2.5) to wait for the appointment but it's seems like it's going incredibly quickly now.
