Ttc with irregular periods

Hello 👋

I’m ttc for the first time, 4 months so far with no luck. I’ve had irregular periods for the last 5 years, cycles can be anywhere from 28-75 days, and there doesn’t seem to be a pattern. I can go 6 months with regular 30ish day cycles and then it’ll be 60 days. I’ve been tested three times for PCOS, including two internal and external scans and they’ve always come back normal. Testosterone levels are normal too, so they’ve never been able to give me a reason for my periods being irregular.

Wondered if anyone else has been through similar? It’s an absolute nightmare tracking ovulation with my periods being so irregular so worried it’s going to take us a long time to conceive. I also have a BMI that’s just over 30 so also a bit worried weight is a contributing factor though no doctor has ever said that.

any advice would be very welcome!

How old are you OP? I found my cycles went like this as I approached 40.

It took us a long time to conceive our second and I didn't even test until cd56 that month as I was so used to having long and irregular cycles and having the huge disappointment of yet another BFN, I'd stopped testing.

I only tested this time as i was on holiday and threw up one morning at breakfast. It turned out I was 5 weeks pregnant.

I put my change in cycles down to perimenopause.

Hi OP - I had very similar! Long cycles ever since I was a teenager. Same as you, been investigated for PCOS but don't have high testosterone/LH and had a couple of internal scans and they've said ovaries aren't polycystic.
I came off the pill a year before TTC and my cycles varied in length between 31 and 55 days. I managed to conceive naturally within 3 (longer) cycles after ovulating circa CD30! (I did have a chemical pregnancy on cycle 2 but conceived the next cycle). I was 32 and my BMI a bit too high, around 27. Now have a 16 month old DS and had perfect pregnancy and normal birth.

Starting to think about TTC #2 soon so I'm going to be in the same boat. After stopping breastfeeding I had a couple of shorter cycles but my last 2 have been 42-43 days. I never bothered using the ovulation tests to be honest as I tried and didn't know if they were working for me. Luckily I had lots of EWCM around ovulation (if you don't try drinking LOADS of water). I haven't had that yet actually so have added in vit b6 this cycle which has been recommended on here. I also just feel I way more want to BD at this time! I also took inositol the whole time before pregnancy and am back on it again now, as well as pregnacare conception.

Other people suggested acupuncture and I did that a few times and HATED it. Did however love reflexology. With weight I'd say rather than focussing on weight loss just focus on eating more home cooked foods and limiting alcohol/caffeine and do walking/swimming (swimming is also great when pregnant).

Aside from TTC, like you I would still love to find out what's going on with my cycle. I paid for private specialist before pregnancy but that was before I got pregnant so it's always with the kind of lens of fertility (and they just said they'd put me on metformin and then clomid if I didn't conceive) but I'd like to know regardless!

Have a look into maca root & myo-inositol, do some research first but I was very similar as yourself, could never guess when my period was going to come, since taking them 2 supplements (along with folic acid and vitamin D) my cycles are much more regular between 29-32 days and I ovulate when I'm supposed to! I take both supplements until I ovulate and then stop them and start again day 1 of my period. I actually came across a girl on tiktok (not a dr) who mentioned them both, worth taking a look :)

I’m only 33 so really hoping it’s not early menopause. I think they did rule that out in one of the previous tests I’d had as I was a bit paranoid because I started my period at 10.

I’ve done 6 tests over the last 3 weeks which were all BFN so very sure I’m not pregnant, especially as I’ve not had any other symptoms too

Ohh thanks, this is really helpful. Tbh it’s just reassuring knowing other people have been through similar but still have success stories as most people I know has conceived quite easily.

I really want to avoid private tests as I can’t really afford them, but think I will explore acupuncture in a few months if still no luck.

I’ve bought a thermometer to do my BBT so hoping that might be a bit more accurate in predicting ovulation too. I’ve not heard about inositol before so will definitely look into that, thanks for sharing your advice!
