6 month heavy periods with clots HELP

So I keep getting very long periods, my current one has been 6 months non stop (not helpful while trying for a baby). I get very large clots and aching back, gp won’t refer until bleeding stops as says I need an exam and swab to be referred. I’m taking tablets to stop the bleeding which I’ve done previously but when I stop my period is 10x worse. I just want to know if anyone else has gone through this? And have youmanaged to get pregnant while on norithsterone period delay tablet. Just looking for people who have advice and have been through anything similar please

Not had this but didn't want to read and run - you've been bleeding continuously for 6 months??? Bless your heart.

Has the GP said what it could be? I'd maybe push for a second opinion regarding a referral, they can't just fob you off indefinitely.

WhatMe123 · 15/01/2025 16:02

This is not normal and you should be referred to check all is ok. Have you. Ot been scanned for fibroids etc?

Notgivenuphope · 15/01/2025 16:04

Bleeding for 6 months is not normal and must be so draining.
Please insist on a gynae referral.

remaininghopeful23 · 15/01/2025 17:40

Your GP sounds outright dangerous for not referring you. That's not true whatsoever that your bleeding needs to stop before you can be referred. You need an urgent gynae consultation asap. I would find a doctor who will refer you or go privately. Urgent care if you have no luck as this really needs to be seen. A woman cannot be left bleeding for 6 months I am baffled as to how this has happened and how unhinged your GP is?! So sorry you've been so massively let down. Consider a complaint about your GP's negligence.

That sounds mad. Why on earth does your GP think you can't be referred whilst bleeding? Its hardly an unfamiliar situation for a gynaecologist (as mine told me when I apologised for an eratic bleed).

I just wanted to reiterate everyone else’s comments that bleeding continually for 6 months is not normal and you need an urgent referral to gynaecology. Has your GP told you what they believe is causing you to bleed for 6 months non-stop?

I saw my GP just over a year ago due to irregular bleeding between periods and was offered an urgent gynaecology referral. It turned out to be quite a minor issue that was resolved with minor surgery. Please push your GP for an urgent referral if you have been bleeding for 6 months non-stop. If your GP won’t refer you please ask for an appointment with a different GP for a second opinion. I don’t intend to scare you, but regularly bleeding outside of your normal period can have a sinister cause.

Do not be embarrassed about being examined whilst bleeding. Medical staff are used to it and don’t give it a second thought. I was examined by the consultant at the hospital and swabbed whilst bleeding rather heavily.

Thank you everyone, I have an appointment with a gp on Friday - this has gone on for years with my period and Friday will be the first time I see a gp, they just ring me for blood tests and that's all, I've been told "it's normal for you" "you have unexplained uterine bleeding" I had a nurse be really rude because I was bleeding slightly during a smear - I just have had no luck. Hopefully I will get an urgent referral but can't see it to be honest, I'm hoping to stop bleeding by the appointment on the period delay tablets they have prescribed me. I just want to be able get pregnant soon

I’m glad you have a GP appointment on Friday. I would really push for the cause of your unexplained uterine bleeding to be found. I’m not a medical expert, but there must be something going on to cause it. Hope you get some answers soon. 😊

I've posted further up op but the fact your gp has just bleeding between periods is just normal for you has shocked me. I've had abnormal sweats in the past so seen gynea alit and they always advocate that bleeding between periods is not normal and should always be investigated. Another example of women's health not being taken seriously. Good luck on Friday op stand your ground and update us afterwards 😁

WhatMe123 · 16/01/2025 12:40

Abnormal smears not sweats 🙈

Burntt · 16/01/2025 13:09

Another example of appalling female healthcare. It drives me mad. I wasn't as bad but was very irregular think my longest period was about a month. Took me 8 years to get a referral and then they just said it's not cancer so we won't be helping you. Had to complain before they would do more. I see it a lot if you need woman's health care you really need to be assertive or they just dismiss you

If you are fobbed off again with "its normal for you" and no referral then seriously change GP. This kind of continual bleeding which triggers prescriptions for drugs such as tranexamic acid is not normal and sustainable long term.

Do you have access to any private health insurance through work or family? If so use it - don't waste time waiting to "see how it goes" on the NHS, especially if you are hoping to TTC.
