Chemical pregnancy

I've seen quite a few people post on here about chemical pregnancies. How do you actually know if you've had a chemical pregnancy?

You know you have had a Chemical if you get a positive test and it either doesnt get any darker and then fades to nothing or it gets darker and then starts to fade if you continue testing or it disappears completely quite suddenly. Chemical pregnancies are very early losses, before you would be five weeks pregnant and are called chemical because the pregnancy would be too early to be seen on a scan at all. After 5 weeks, when evidence of a developing pregnancy might be seen on a scan, it is called a clinical pregnancy.
Chemicals can occur for a variety of reasons.

Thanks @Objectiontime - so if you usually wait for your period you would miss a chemical?

Yes - or just think that it was a day or two late.

There are probably lots of women who have had a chemical pregnancy but are totally unaware as they got their period at the normal time or just a day or 2 late.

You'd only know if you tested early and got a BFP but then a negative a few days later.

Thanks everyone ☺️

Hi - when I had one I had period maybe 2-3 days later than expected however for me it was pretty painful (whereas usually my periods are painless) and quite big clumps (sorry to be graphic!) I did conceive the very next month though and that pregnancy is now a healthy 15 month old!

@Applecrumble9 I'm with you on the symptoms. I have read in some obviously unreliable websites that you dont get symptoms with a Chemical but you and I can attest to the fact that sometimes you do. Sore boobs, nausia, strange taste in mouth, exhaustion, etc,etc and all before 5 weeks!

I had one last week! I had cramps in my lower stomach area and in my bottom (real spasms) . Loads of clots. I couldn’t stand the smell of food and felt nauseous every morning at 5am ish.

the nausea and smell issue lead me to taking a test which showed I was pregnant (very early on!) - I wouldn’t have tested otherwise.

I have since tested negative and my GP checked my wee sample and did another pregnancy test today to make sure everything was “finished”.

I have had a few miscarriages in my time and this one, even though it was ‘just’ a “chemical pregnancy” absolutely devastated me.

The information online was very dismissive which wasn’t great. Made me feel silly for being so upset.

Your message sounds a lot like what happened to me last week. I’m sorry you went though it too, I hope you are recovering well.

Iwas getting faint positives a day after my missed period. It got a little darker but not much, then 6 days after my period was due I started to spot for a few days then bleed heavily. Then I took another test it was fainter then negative. I also had some pregnancy symptoms in the week that I had missed my period.

I just want to ask… what happened to your next cycle? Was it delayed ovulation or return to normal? I am on CD 10 now and would normally notice some EWCM by now but nothing has come.

Not necessarily, I think they can happen up to 6 weeks so given that would mean your period had been two weeks late chances are you would have tested..

curliegirlie · 07/02/2025 14:23

I don't think there's a formal definition. I think most people would class a second line that disappears before AF a chemical, and one that lingers on afterwards an early miscarriage.

I had a positive test 3 years ago, then started bleeding 5 days later and the MC was confirmed by blood tests the following week. However the sodding second line hung around for another 3 weeks....

I had a chemical pregnancy in December and I tested early as I had heaps of symptoms.
I'm curious to know, how long did it take anyone elses' body to re-adjust after a chemical pregnancy? My body is still all over the place 2 months afterwards.

Objectiontime · 14/03/2025 22:48

Counting the day my chemical bleed started as day 1, it was a cycle of about 50 days with my first chemical and was an ovulatory that month. Second chemical almost exactly the same.

Kwirkx · 29/09/2025 13:29

Is this a chemical pregnancy? I would be 4 weeks + 3 at the moment and had a clear blue test say im 1-2 weeks pregnant yesterday and these are the tests. I dont know what im hoping for🥲

I’ve had 2 that I’m aware of , tested a couple of days before period was due , and got faint but definite positives , then got period a couple days later ‘ as normal ‘
