Vaginal ultrascan what can it show

we have been TTC for more than 2 and a half years. Went for fertility bloods and scab today and the lady who did it described a dark area that could be a very early pregnancy or could be the lining coming away to menstruate. I was really taken aback and she said I don’t want to get your hopes up.

but is it too early to see that? My period isn’t due for another week. Should I do a pregnancy test? I don’t want a too early false negative.

the not knowing is making me really anxious

really grateful for any thoughts. Thanks so much

Following because I also had a vaginal ultrasound to check something today! She didn't say anything about pregnancy but asked twice where I was in my cycle and if my period is regular. AF is also due next week. Scan was clear for what they were looking for so was confused why she asked me twice! Now wondering reading this if she saw something too

Do you know how many DPO you are?

CopeNorth · 20/12/2024 13:11

I only track on my phone so I have a predicted ovulation period of 7-12th of this month. So 8 - 13 days post that. Does that make sense?

If you're over 2 years TTC, you should try and get a better grip on what's happening with your cycle, so using OPKs and BBT rather than relying on just the average predictions of your app. You might find out you've been getting your timings wrong, assuming you have a 14 day LP, rather than a 12 day one, or whatever. It's not a silver bullet but knowledge is power.

Seconding this comment - OP, if you're two years down, then I would definitely recommend looking into proper methods of tracking rather than relying on predictions from an app based on a 'typical' cycle. If I did that I'd be missing ovulation every single time!

Agree with pp,s , I never used to ovulate til around day 21… you really should be tracking temperate and cervical mucous. I highly recommend Toni Wechsler’s book, “Taking Charge of your Fertility” …should be compulsory reading for anyone before they take fertility tests ( which are also often based on an “average” cycle when many women aren’t average!)

curliegirlie · 20/12/2024 17:42

As an example, today I just got a positive OPK on CD13, whereas I usually ovulate on CD15 or 16....

Thanks all. Yes I probably should. I should feel really anxious and a bit depressed thinking about fertility.

I’ve had quite a bad experience with seeking help and advice. I first saw the GP after TTC for around a year because at that time my period was 13 days late but the test was negative. I asked for tests / help and he shouted at me that women miss periods all the time and sent me away without any advice.

I then saw another GP about a year ago. I asked to see a woman and my husband came too. They did tests. All ok and said they’d refer us.

I followed up a few times with the practice who just said I’d be on a waiting list. After a year of waiting I pushed and it turns out the referral was written but never sent.

so to speed up I just paid for private tests. This was the scan yesterday where she said she could see something and - fingers crossed - let us know if it is! We have the consultation with test results in early Jan. I’ve still never had any doctor give any advice on how to try other than have sex every other day.

Maybe the onus is on me to be more clued up but I just feel a bit miserable reading up on anything like I have PTSD 😂🤦🏽‍♀️ from being shouted at as a grown woman by the GP. Hahahaha

just no idea if the scan could show anything so early as she got really excited. I ended up doing a test which was negative but my period isn’t due for nearly a week so it may be too early.

sorry for the life story!

@CopeNorth ah I feel for you but definitely it’s one of those things that the more you find out for yourself the better you can advocate for yourself , we presume GPs always know best but it’s not always the case ( and understanding your cycle can also give you clues as to what, if there is an issue other than timing, may be an issue…as another eg. once I started tracking I realised about 1 in every 3/4 of my cycles were anovulatory cycles, in a way that took the pressure off as to why it was taking so long (!)and I had help from a herbalist to improve my cycle and hormonal balance). Good luck xx

curliegirlie · 20/12/2024 19:34

Sigh....

How do GPs so often get this so badly wrong and offer no advice??!

No, women don't "miss periods all the time" unless they're pregnant. Otherwise the cause is either an annovulatory cycle or later than expected ovulation. How do healthcare professionals not understand this??! If you'd been advised to track your cycles back then, chances are you wouldn't still be here now 🤦‍♀️

CopeNorth · 21/12/2024 12:48

Thanks all. That’s really helpful. I’ll look into the suggestions.

if anyone has any knowledge or thoughts on what the scan can actually show (and how early it might show something) I’d be super grateful.

or how likely a false negative test is if it’s just too early.

I feel like she was really excited - she said “do call and let me know if I was right!” And “I bet you’ll run home and do a pregnancy test right after this!” grinning all the while and looking thrilled.

I almost feel like I want someone to tell us there is a problem so we can just start looking into adoption because after seeing that first GP anything with fertility makes me so anxious and sad now. 😂🤦🏽‍♀️ plus we know we don’t want to go down an invasive route like IVF

Without knowing for certain what your DPO is it's impossible to know the chances of a false BFN...

I got my BFPs at 10 and 11dpo, so I'd trust any positive or negative result from 12dpo onwards.
