Need mercury filling out - should I wait before TTC?

So one of my teeth is really painful, even sipping water is causing pain. Went to dentist yesterday who says I need my mercury filling replaced.

I've read the largest exposure to mercury is when filling comes out. Children and pregnant women aren't allowed mercury fillings, so I'm thinking it could be potentially harmful if I conceived just before or after.

Not due to get it done until February, but I might try see an emergency dentist to get it done quicker due to the pain, but it will be £££ because not included in my plan with current dentist.

I'm anxious to wait because of our ages (37 and DP 45)

What does everyone think? How long does the mercury stay in your system?

I assume you've had that filling for quite a while anyway so I can't see it affecting you when you haven't conceived yet. I had a a grey filling removed which was loose earlier on in my pregnancy and it was replaced with a white filling with no issues and as far as I know baby is fine (27 wks). I think when not pregnant I'll be getting white fillings in future as it baffles me how it's ok to put mercury in our mouths but not for children or if pregnant. I need to read up on it more though 😅

@jellyfish2 Thanks for replying. Yeah I've had the filling a very long time, so long the dentist doesn't even have record of it any more! I am concerned though about the mercury being released when they drill it out. I'm going to ask for a white filling as replacement. I'm so glad you and baby are fine, reassuring to know. I just don't think I want to take any chances. I'll see if I can get it out asap, considering I can hardly drink water for the pain hopefully they can fit me in quicker.

Definitely get it out, it's not worth being in so much pain. The only downside with the white filling is the expense but it's definitely worth it! Good luck TTC 😊
