went to see my doctor yesterday about somethingand we were discussing the fact that I am TTC and am currently on day 48 of my cycle with no period happening as yet. I had some wrist pain and was explaining I hadn't taken anything (pain killers)as I was unsure if I could be PG(am charting and had a rise on day 38 indicating ovulation still up fingers crossed )I was 9 DPO yesterday so explained that I had done a preg test and that it was neg (as I knew he'd ask if I could be PG) but that obviously it was probably too early to show up even if I was - to which he replied "oh no pregnancy tests can tell if you are pregnant straight from when you ovulate"

I am pretty sure he's wrong but am now concered as he agreed to give me a blood test (after I pestered ) and am now convinced he knows NOTHING about fertlity (he also said my period is EXACTLY 14 days from ovulation - will not consider any difference even though I chart and know my last cycle was 23 days and my LP was only 9 days. and also said my blood tests for hormone problems can be done on any day (not days 1-3 and 23 as the gyne nurse told me). Also the Gyne nurse said my DH had to have another semen anlysis as the first one (after a vasectomy reversal) can give falsley high levels of sperm and we also need to know morphology/motility. Doctor said his sperm tests were fine but seriously do not trust that he knows what hes talking about after being told the above blatantly untrue stuff.

He is a lovely old man but really doesn't seem to have a clue. Its a single practice so cant use another doctor.

If you've read this far well done! MY point is - should i be reporting this somewhere as it seems highly highly incompetent to me and may well be stopping me from accessing what I need in terms of fertility assessments.

eeeeeekkkk help!

Can you change practice? You need someone you have confidence with, who can properly refer you and so on. I know very little about TTC but he does seem to be off the mark and once you've lost confidence in him it's hard to regain it.

I am considering changing but for evey other issue he is great - plus I never struggle to get apps and he's great with my son. I just dont know whether I should be doing something about this as I would hate someone else who doesnt obsess read up on/chart to go to him and possibly delay their access to help

thanks shreksmissus - does any one have any advice or experience/knowledge about reporting things like this? Or is likely that I will be bangiung my head against a brick wall with this route?

I am shocked!

I wouldn't hesitate in seeing someone else straight away.

I am fairly new to all this TTC stuff but even I know that what he has said is rubbish.

I would change doctors, if you can, immediately. You are going to end up wasting precious time with him and, potentially, not getting the treatment you may need

how can a HPT be positive at ovulation?! When you first ovulate you're not pregnant!

CaptainKarvol · 29/04/2008 11:30

You could try contacting your PCT with your concerns - they should have a Patient Advice and Liaison (PALS) person who can help you with what to do next. And they can organise someone to speak to your doc/ provide training if necessary. Your GP is, as everyone else says, wrong wrong wrong.

pinkmook · 29/04/2008 12:07

Thanks CaptaonKarvol - would he know it had come from me if I go down that route?? (cowering yellwbelly emoticon)

OP posts:
CaptainKarvol · 29/04/2008 13:55

no! he wouldn't know it was you. You can express a complaint, if that is what you think is needed, or a concern, or any shade of seriousness. It doesn't go to your GP as something from you. PALS will help, I'm sure. Go for it, you could be protecting someone else from bad advice and the consequences of it.

pinkmook · 29/04/2008 13:59

Thats what I figured - I know he is wrong but a few years ago I doubt I would have known about all the charting stuff and would have taken his word for it.

Thanks for the advice CaptainK

Sorry - but I think this is all way over the top

Pinkmook - I think your last message summed up what concern would now be - ''a few years ago I doubt I would have known about all the charting stuff and would have taken his word for it''

So what other things could you now taking his word for because you don't know any better iyswim??

I know not all doctors are fertility specialists but surely he should know the real basics - the information he has given you seems quite shockingly incorrect, even for a doctor that isn't a fertility specialist.

Up to you what you decide to to do but I personally would not feel confident that I would be getting the best care staying with him. If he knows he's not a fertility specialist then he should have said so rather than giving you incorrect advice

first line meant to read 'what my conern would now be'
