Negative then positive

Had negative test 12 dpo and now a positive test 15dpo. First baby was a positive test 10dpo. What explanations could there be for this? Late implantation (but how late can it be) / hormone levels maybe not strong enough so I shouldn't get too excited?

Maybe you ovulated later than you thought, how were you tracking?

Writerz34 · 27/10/2024 06:49

Maybe but unlikely - tracking using mucus and bbt and actually only dtd once in that period this month as partner travelling so it must have been then.. just did a clear blue week's test and it does say 2-3 weeks which would be accurate. But weird to have had negatives so recently...

Will a GP do a blood test to confirm? Or even a private GP?

2-3 weeks is reassuring, perhaps the negative test was a dud?

GP can do hCG for you but the ranges are quite wide if you’re trying to date from it so the most it will tell you is that it’s doubling as it should which again will be reassuring.

Ok thanks - I'll ask GP to do tests a few days apart then...

I had this with my first child. The test was negative at 12 dpo and positive at 14dpo. I assumed I implanted later given it can happen between 6dpo and 12dpo. She's now a very healthy 2.5 year old

Ok thanks! Will attempt 2 not panic!!

I don't think the GP would do hCG tests if you've got a positive test result? It also depends on the sensitivity of the tests you were using, concentration of urine at the time you tested.. ovulation timing might be odd, could have implanted later. Best of luck and congratulations!

Writerz34 · 28/10/2024 05:49

Thanks @Harriet1989 yes I'm wondering if a private GP would do it...

I got a faint positive on 16 DPO this time - and now getting darker and a 2-3weeks on Clearblue at what would be 20 DPO… So progressing seemingly normally from when it started even if it started so late.

I tested at something like 11 and 13 days and completely negative.

I suppose I must have ovulated later than I thought? Although this seems odd as I have very, very regular cycles.

I’m thinking a combination of possibly ovulating a day or two late and later implantation?

I’d assume similar for you - implantation on the later end of the scale and then a positive a few days after.

Writerz34 · 28/10/2024 06:35

Yes I guess so @Thistimearound - sounds like it's just later implantation for us both

I have had HCG levels taken privately btw. You can pay for it but it won’t tell you how far along you are as accurately as you want, only the dating scan can do that.

Taking the HCG levels is only useful to prove if your levels are increasing at the right levels. I only did it because I got “stuck” on 2-3 weeks on a Clearblue for weeks and was worried my levels weren’t increasing fast enough. Private HCG confirmed my fears. In reality it was probably pointless, it would have been similar cost and more conclusive just to go for a scan at 6 weeks.

This was all a few years a go before 2nd DC.

My plan this time is that I’m just going to vaguely keep an eye that levels are increasing via tests and go for a scan at 8 weeks or so, assuming I make it that far.

And this is yet another reason why I never test before I've missed a period.

You're pregnant OP, congratulations.
