Hi all, keen for a bit of advice. I'm 39, husband is about to be 43, we have a 22 month old daughter who was conceived very easily. We started trying for no 2 in Feb this year, stupidly thought it would be as easy and it's been anything but... I had a chemical pregnancy in May and then conceived immediately after and unfortunately had a MMC at 8 weeks, which resulted in surgery under a general and the whole thing took forever to be 'over' - and really took it's toll emotionally too. I'm now in my third proper cycle since all that and it's still not happening....

Keen to be proactive and conscious of our age. Where do I start? Do I start with getting us both tested? How do I go about that? Do you get anything on the NHS? I am seeing my GP later this week about other stuff but want to ask her about this too...

I'm guessing we'll have to pay for testing, what do you guys recommend?

Thank you so much in advance for any replies!

Hey, I didn’t want to read and run but what I will say is be kind to yourself, and give it time, you’ve been through a lot, but it will happen. It took 10 months for me to fall pregnant this time round. I thought it was never going to happen. There’s lots of things I did differently this cycle that could have helped or it could be just luck. The drs will help you if you’ve been trying for 6 months but not sure where it stands if you already have a child together. The dr told me the fertility clinic wouldn’t help us as we already had a child together. Keep doing what your doing and try to relax and if you wanna chat or wanna know the things I done differently this month please feel free to message me xx

Hello! We're late 30s and 40s respectively too. I have a 3 year old. The NHS absolutely can still help if you already have a child so don't let them fob you off! I've had my LH, FSH and oestradiol tested, i've had a long chat to my GP and an internal/external ultrasound too to check for fibroids etc. Male partners can also have semen analysis. So lots they can do. I really feel for you. We're 1.5 years into trying and it never gets any easier. One thing I did do is pay for Randox Health's full female fertility bloods. I found out I was low on iron so that's been an easy fix (200mg of ferrous sulphate a day over the counter). Also found out I have low AMH which was tough but good to know and NHS won't test that. Its absolutely rank but ive started taking Proceive Max and my luteal phase extended to 12 days. Aside from that and iron i take high dose Omega 3 as its good for egg quality. Definitely go to the GP and ask for the things I had done. I'll be visiting a fertility clinic in December to see if there's anything (other than IVF, which we're not keen on), we can try. Good luck with it all and solidarity. It's hard! I hope some of this helps 😊 X

Hiya, thank you so much @Kels21 and @secondtimelucky87 for your lovely replies... All really useful tips and great to know that you can get some stuff on the NHS. I just didn't really know where to start with the GP. Thanks so much solidarity also, it's a lot sometimes!
