What to expect from GP App?

Hi,

My partner and I have been trying to conceive are second baby for 12 months now. Our first who is now 5 was conceived very quickly. I have a diagnosis of PCOS but have regular (but short and light) periods. I’ve never had a scan to check for any cysts etc

I have a GP appointment next week to discuss this and see what the next steps will be and just wondering what to expect from this appointment from anyone who has also been to see their GP for issues conceiving after 12 months of trying? (I am 34 btw)

thanks!

You will likely be offered tests (blood/ultrasound for you and semen for dh) to check for any issues. they can take a while with wait lists so it's good to get started.

Depending on area and your local nhs trust you are unlikely to be eligible for fertility treatment for a second child.

You may or may not be offered blood tests and semen tests, in our area any fertility appointment or treatment have to be private as already have one successful pregnancy.

In our trust, you cannot have IVF to conceive a second child but you can have a treatment such as ovulation induction, which with a condition like PCOS, might be all you need.

OP,* *I have PCOS. First baby was ovulation induction, second was natural conception when we were halfway through the fertility treatment process again. GP appointment for me was just a discussion and they referred me for bloods, ultrasound and DH semen analysis, plus detailed medical / gynae history of us both. When those results came back, asked to go for HSG (xray of tubes using contrast dye). Then prescribed medication plus arranged scans for ovulation induction process. My letter at the start of the referral process said it could be a 30 week wait for the first appointment, but it actually came after about 12weeks. In that time, we overhauled our diets, DH stopped drinking as well, both made sure we were on the right vitamins etc, so we were ready when the appointment came.

Similar boat here and in the middle of it TTC #2. GP referred me for bloods and ultrasounds that confirmed PCOS. He’s now referred me to fertility/gynae. If they want to see me it could be a 6 month wait, if they’re happy for him to prescribe Clomid then they will approve him to dispense it so a lot quicker.
It seems a postcode lottery regarding what they’ll do for those who already have a child. Mine will offer medication but of course not IVF.

Hope you get the answers you want

Thanks everyone for all the replies. GP app today was very quick. I have an appointment at the end of the month for bloods to check I am ovulating but as I’m having regular periods etc that is the only thing they will do at this stage. I was told (as I already knew and expected) that any fertility treatment would not be funded by the NHS for a second child.

Hopefully the bloods come back normal and it’s just a waiting game! The GP did say ‘secondary infertility’ is quite common and it’s not unusual to conceive your first child easily but struggle to conceive a second.

Ah well, at least the ball is rolling I suppose!
