Anyone needed IVF for second baby, after falling pregnant with first naturally?

So we’re not quite here yet. But have been TTC our second for 6 months and it does worry me that it’s just not going to happen for us. Also quite sad that we wanted a small age gap and we’re not going to have that now.

Does anyone have any experience of needing IVF for a second baby after conceiving naturally for their first?

I am aware that we may still fall pregnant naturally again. And of course we would get further testing first. But I’m just conscious of not wanting a huge age gap and so need to get the ball rolling really.

Yeah this is the situation myself and my partner are in.

tried to conceive second for 2/3 years with no luck so decided to go for private investigation appointment as were 38 and don’t have time to waste.

turns out my partner (who I conceived son with 5 years ago) has low sperm count and we need ICSI. We’ve just completed our first round and whilst I’m pregnant I’ve been told it will be an early loss.

Good luck on your journey 🤞🏼

I've been where you are but I'd just say don't give up hope! After about 8 months of trying for our 2nd we went for fertility checks convinced I'd need IVF. I had a problem with my luteal phase and so whilst they were testing they gave me progesterone and first month pregnant with number 2! So it can always be something simple!
I wanted a really small age gap (2under2) but ended up with a little bigger but it's still lovely! You'll get there 😊 good luck!

Thank you! Glad you got there in the end.

How long from your first tests to being prescribed progesterone was it ☺️?

Hey we had initial appointment and consultation in second half of June and started in mid august so it was very quick.

Thank you, been told it’s going to be an early loss but going to push for a scan as nothing has happened.

I'm going to have a much bigger age gap than planned. We started ttc when DC was 2.5, after 6 months got pregnant but early miscarriage, 10 months later started initial fertility investigations, got pregnant the following month but was a ruptured ectopic, decided we weren't going to explore further treatment such as IVF as the cost and success rate at my age felt too much of a gamble, 22 months post ectopic got pregnant again, currently 10 weeks so fingers crossed all goes to plan. However we wanted a 3 year age gap and instead will have almost 7!

I was in this situation. WISH I had gone for ivf sooner because I would have at least had more chance of some decent eggs. I got an embryo but it didn’t take and I kind of knew it wouldn’t. Then I got eggs that didn’t fertilise. I was about 38-39.
I think i realized on some level I was flogging a dead horse and threw in the towel. It was a good thing in way because my health ended up taking a nose dive and the kid I already had needed bucket loads of parenting

We have decided not to have IVF for a second, partly the cost but mostly as I don’t think it’s fair to take our time, emotions and energy away from our first baby. It’s a massive emotional and physical rollercoaster to have IVF with no guarantees.

Elisabeth3468 · 01/10/2024 17:26

I had the opposite! Needed ivf for first baby, second baby conceived in just under a year despite known fertility issues. We were thinking we'd have to do ivf again.
I wouldn't worry after 6 months, it's still early days.

It’s early days but me and my partner are both fit and healthy, we’re both under 30 and have conceived previously.

I just have a feeling that something isn’t quite right.

I know that there’s only a 25% chance of falling pregnant each month if everything is timed right, but surely due to our age, health and previous pregnancy, our odds should be much higher than this.

We had secondary infertility and did IVF for our second baby, and she’s 14 now! IVF worked first time for us even though I had poor ovarian reserve for my age ( mid thirties). I believe that statistically couples who already have proven fertility are more likely to have a successful outcome with IVF. Wishing you all the best.

Drizzlethru · 01/10/2024 18:23

The NHS in my area do not refer people for fertility testing until after 12 months TTC, so under that criteria you have another 6 months for it to be considered needing testing under nhs. Bthough I know it is hard to compare when a previous child may have been conceived quicker than that.

obviously private clinics will take money for testing at any stage if it helps to reassure you.

we had nhs ivf for our first child. Then after 3 hrs of no success, we funded private ivf and lots of other treatments ( as both had issues) for our subsequent pregnancies. None of our cycles were similar in terms of length of success.

Bumping to see if anyone else has any advice

NHS is a year for tests. You can run private bloods through something like hertility and your OH can get a seman analysis privately easily as well. We used fertility solutions. About 150 quid each. Or you go to a private clinic and get a full check for both of you for about 500/600. That might give you peace of mind. It does get expensive quickly.

6 months isn't that long though. Your odds are about 25% each month in your 20s and early 30s so yes it should take four months but that's not how statistics work. You have time on your side.

We had secondary infertility for about 18 months and discovered it was male factor but did eventually conceive naturally. I found letting go of my ideal notion of age gaps helpful!
