Is pregnancy at 40 likely if you try for 1-2 years? The 5% statistics per months look depressingly low.

Hi I'm ttc I'm 41 I don't have the answers but I'm totally trying my best. I believe there could still be a useable egg somewhere given my cycle is regular 28 days exactly. ( I have a 5yo dd)

I had a mmc in April though so it kind of shocked me because I thought everything was ok I had a blighted ovum where the embryo dissolved really early on leaving me with gestation sac empty but positive tests and all the pregnancy symptoms 🥺. Anyway since then iv had so many vitamins pregnacare conception him/her and b12 injections iv been prepping my body because I'm hoping that will help conceive. I'm currently 3dpo on tww Confused

I’ll be trying for a second child around the age of 40/41 so I’ve looked into this a bit. Although the 5% statistic is thrown around a lot, I don’t think there is good data to back it up. It also doesn’t fit what I’ve seen anecdotally. I think it’s a hard thing to study because a lot of people are done their families by 40 so don’t know whether they can still have kids or not. The ones that are trying in their 40s are more likely to have pre-existing fertility problems as well so it skews the results.

The Fertility Friend app I was using provided a graph of time to conception versus age based on the data of their many users. It’s not a perfect sample, but I think it probably gives a better idea of your real chances (if you don’t have a fertility issue). It shows that those who were able to conceive took significantly less than 2 years on average. Even if you believe the 5% statistic, that would mean you are likely to conceive in 20 months.

I’m currently pregnant with my first, conceived at age 39 after about a year of trying. It’s been an easy pregnancy and baby is healthy. My mother had my sister at age 41 without any problems. I think fertility is individual so there are no guarantees, but I also think it’s possible to increase your chances by having a healthy lifestyle (this includes the father).

@VereeViolet
Congratulations I'm glad the pregnancy is going well. Interesting what you've written too i agree about the lifestyle diet vitamins etc I'm just at peace with the fact iv done everything I can to get my body tip top and now it's over to my body to make the magic happen. Even if it takes a few months I'm hoping to sift through to find a good egg. Nothing to loose and I'll be healthier in the process is my thoughts anyway.

Thanks for your replies, it was really interesting to hear your comments and a different perspective on things. I will also look into the B12 injections. I am 9dpo but think it's unlikely this month. Good luck!

@Sara1003
Could you do a sneaky early test? I bought a cheap pack on Amazon but too early for me. I think I'm out this month I didn't dtd enough and I had such bad cramping last night so I'm feeling like it didn't workConfused

@Itonlytakesone I already did, not good at the waiting game. It was negative and only 2nd month so not hopeful. Good luck to you.

Hi Everyone, just to hopefully pass on a bit of positivity that it definitely CAN still happen.....

I am 41 and currently 13 weeks pregnant with my second child (conceived naturally - I'll be 42 on my due date).

First baby was born when I was 37 and I fell pregnant very quickly (second cycle). We've never used any birth control or protection since she was about 6 months old so although not officially TTC, tracking ovulation etc, we did nothing to prevent it. Didn't take any pre conception supplements or anything, didn't make any lifestyle changes, it was just very much a case of 'if it's meant to happen it will happen'.

Hit 40 and my previously clockwork cycles went haywire and they've remained long and irregular ever since, I've not had a sniff of a BFP in almost 4 years and had told myself I was perimenopausal so it wasn't going to happen.

I'm so used to irregular periods now I didn't even think anything of it when my July period didn't arrive. Never even thought about it until on a family holiday and I suddenly threw up at breakfast and couldn't face the thought of a glass of wine. Sent hubby out to buy a test 'just to rule it out' and sure enough it was a BFP!

Good luck to you all, stay positive. I'm sending lots of sticky baby dust your way

Thanks for your comments it's really good to know. I have experienced a couple of miscarriages so the TTC journey is a bit stressful. Fingers crossed still a chance.
