TTC on Levothyroxine

Hi everyone,

I’ve recently been put on 25mg of levothyroxine after being diagnosed with hypothyroidism from a couple of blood tests.

We’ve been TTC since June 2023 so I’m hoping this will do the trick!

How long did it take people to fall pregnant after being put on levothyroxine?

TIA x

I was just searching this topic as am in the exact same boat, found out today and been trying since December. Have you been told to stop ttc at first?

Acphillips15 · 02/09/2024 21:30

@LimePombear no they haven’t, just that I need another blood test in 3 months?

I conceived within 2 months after my TSH came down with thyroxine after a year of trying x

With DD1 I conceived 6 months after starting on Levothyroxine. My cycles have been stable ever since and I've also had positive OPKs practically every cycle too (a far cry from my first 10 months of TTC which included a 3 month cycle....). However DD2 still took 12 cycles and my current TTC round is 33 cycles and counting (although I'm now ancient...42... which is probably more of a factor than my hypothyroidism).

Did you all keep trying while your TSH levels were high? I’ve been asked to and then test again in 8 weeks but dose is low to start so it could be even longer. I don’t want to wait and it would also mean very bad timing if we got pregnant next year! Not that ttc is getting us anywhere anyway…

Acphillips15 · 03/09/2024 10:44

@LimePombear I personally wouldn’t wait. I’ve read on here that people are still getting pregnant/having a baby with their TSH higher than it needs to be!

I couldn't bear to wait another 2+ months when it’s already been 15 months x

Hello all! I've had an underactive thyroid and been on 150mg of levothyroxine since I was 18, am now 32. It took me two years and three rounds of clomid to have a successful pregnancy with my first due to PCOS. With my second I fell pregnant on my second cycle after an early miscarriage. Whilst TSH can affect fertility, in my experience it's impact is not that severe in comparison to other conditions such as PCOS. Don't count yourself out just because your TSH is above what is considered optimum! It may not have as big of an effect as you're fearing. Love to you all!

I was diagnosed with subclinical hypothyroidism in April (very mild, TSH 5.5), my latest blood test is 0.97 so actually slightly too low but we’re starting to TTC this month. My periods were very regular and ovulated about day 16 pre-levothyroxine but in the last 2 months I’ve had 4/5 periods and unsure if ovulated! This month I seem to be ovulating late around now day 20 so who knows what’s going on!

Helpful to hear from others also on levothyroxine!

@Acphillips15 hello, just wondering how you got on? I’m in exactly the same boat. Been on 25mcg for 4 weeks now (tsh was 6.9). Thanks

Hiya, unfortunately still TTC and currently going through our first round of IVF, so not sure the under active thyroid had anything to do with it anyway! X

When I was first diagnosed (with blood tests showing TSH of 6, then 12), I’d been trying about 10 months (including a loopy 3 or 4 month cycle) but then fell pregnant 6 months after going on Levothyroxine. DD2 took longer, but my TSH levels were stable then, so probably other issues getting in the way. This one (I’m currently 28 weeks) took over 3 years in total, but the 3 years were book ended by early miscarriages- the first pregnancy I’d been a bit lax about taking the pill, three years of nothing, then the second early miscarriage was followed by a sticky bean just 3 months later. So a very long winded way of saying if your thyroid’s the only issue (no male factor, or age etc etc) you shouldn’t have a problem.
