Hello I'm 37 and these were results of recent set of tests done on CD5. As it was just NHS the app said normal but isn't FSH 24 for example really high and indicative of perimenopause? For context I've been struggling to conceive second baby for 15 months and have male factor issues too. Any insight from anyone who knows I'd be so grateful. Thank you! P.S. I am waiting for GP to get to back to me but just anxious in the meantime.

FSH should be tested on days 1-3 of your cycle. Any later and the levels will start rising.
You should re-test IMO.

It won't let me edit the post now annoyingly but I did in fact have them done on CD3. Just made an error on my initial post. Appreciate your reply thanks.

Hello :)
Leave it to your doctor to interpret and explain the results.
Not to strangers on the internet who have not studied medicine
Good luck 🍀

I get what you are saying and appreciate your reply. However: I did call my GP and was told she couldn't interpret my results. This is the same GP who failed to tell me the first time that they needed to be done on CD2-5 so I had to take them again. This is the same GP surgery who failed to put my referral through when I first had these tests done almost a year ago. In that time the number has risen dramatically. Please remember it's a human being with real emotions posting these things. I am in a state of shock after seeing an FSH of 24 and have been numb all day. I've had far more help from lovely women who've been through similar on mumsnet than through my GP. I will be paying for a private gynaecology consultation next month once I have the results of the scan I'm having. I just wanted to hear from others who've been through similar in the interim.

The Internet can be excellent for support, that's for sure.
But when it comes to interpreting a blood test, this becomes less suitable. And this can be dangerous because you can receive stressful incorrect information.
This section of the forum is full of women with anxiety about something (I'm one of them), I just wouldn't want you to be given false and stressful information.
By the way I am a medical doctor but I am a pediatrician so I don't have the capacity to answer you properly.
I wish you all the best for the future, I really do.

secondtimelucky87 · 27/08/2024 20:02

Thank you and I apologise if I sounded snappy. I'm just in such a state of shock and struggling to come to terms with the fact that this might be the end (blessed as I am to have had one child after trying to conceive for many years). It has come as a real blow. I am hoping that seeing a specialist will shed some more light.

I wish you all the very best too. 😊

You never really know what the other person behind the screen is going through...On may 2024, my partner and I lost our first baby at 22 weeks' gestation to a rare and serious genetic syndrome.
My husband is an endocrinologist and when he talks about his job, I understand just how complicated the world of hormones is. I'm not sure you should feel condemned by a single hormone test result. Maybe there are things that medicine can suggest, even if the blood test is not the one expected . The consultation you've planned will allow you to take stock of all this, and I hope that he'll be a humane doctor and take into account all aspects of your situation.

I am so, so sorry for your loss. I can't imagine. 💔

I wish you all the very best on your journey in the future and healing over the coming months.

Thanks so much for your kind and encouraging words. They are very much appreciated.

Ok, 24 is considered high for your age. Your ovaries are working really hard to build up to ovulate. FSH levels can fluctuate each month so you might be asked to repeat the test.
At 37, you should be referred to a fertility specialist after not conceiving after 6 months. That may be your GP's next step.

Thanks so much for your reply. Yes that's what I thought which is why seeing 'normal' on my notes was such a surprise. I already have one child so have been told there's nothing else NHS can do. I've got an internal scan booked next month though and will take the results of that, my bloods and husband's SA along to see a specialist privately. Deep down I think I know it probably won't happen though. We also have some MFI issues and it took 3 years to conceive the first time. Just such a shock to see such a steep decline. 😞

I had some day 3 bloods done last month, I was also frustrated by the GP comments on the app so I put them through ChatGPT to ‘analyse’ for me. As others say, obviously you want to speak to a human specialist but might be good as a first step if your mind is racing at this time.

Yes, it's a shock to get a result like that at your age.
Please remember that FSH can vary hugely from one month to the next so don't consider yourself out of the running as such. I appreciate you have MFI to contend with as well so you may want to consider private fertility guidance to find out what options are available to you.

I've been where you are now and I know how utterly devastated you are feeling. I wish you enormous luck!

Thanks so much. ❤️ It has really helped to chat to people here. I'm always so touched by what a lovely and supportive community it tends to be on these forums. It definitely makes you feel less alone. From what I've read it's worth repeating the test if you've had one really high result so I'll be doing that ahead of consultation.
