Is egg freezing worth it?

Hello,

I am in my late thirties and I have decided to leave my long term partner who can't make a decision about whether he wants children or not. There's a chance I might meet someone else and have a baby naturally, but I know that's getting increasingly unlikely due to my age. I would consider adoption alone if I was in a stable position to do so over the next few years, but I was also wondering if it's worth getting my eggs frozen. I would really appreciate any advice from anyone in a similar position.

Egg freezing doesn't have great statistics unfortunately. Unless you're young and have a few rounds so bank plenty of eggs.
That isn't to say it definitely won't work obviously. But unless you've tried to conceive it's impossible to know what your egg quality is like at late 30s. Plenty of people will conceive easily in their late 30s so freezing a decent number of eggs might work. But plenty of others won't. Eggs don't freeze as well as sperm or embryos so the chances of conceiving using them are lower than natural chances.
I froze my eggs at 37. I was well aware the chances of them working were low but it made me feel better. I've recently used them 5 years later. I created 3 embryos and had one put back in and I'm currently 7 weeks pregnant. But I haven't yet had my viability scan and there's no guarantee this will go to term anyway. I think they gave me a 25% chance of a live birth.

Get your AMH and day 3 FSH levels tested, which will give a sense of your ovarian reserve and estimate of how your ovaries might respond to stimulation. This will help you predict how many cycles you might need to consider, and consequently the overall cost. A scan to count the number of follicles on your ovaries is also worth doing (AFC).

It's very unfair on women that this kind of thing factors into breakups at this age!

Hello

I froze some eggs when I was 37 and single. I haven’t used them as I did meet somebody and fell pregnant naturally.
I don’t know about success rates, but it
depends on the individual as to the quality of the eggs, and whether it’s worth it or not depends on whether the odds are worth the money for you. It was for me at the time.
It is worth getting the initial tests done (including AMH) to understand if it might work for you.
I also looked into adoption and went to a seminar run by the local council (they run them regularly) to find out more information.
I’m sorry you are in this situation and hope you can make the best decision.
