How long did it take to conceive at age 40? Trying to work out if I have a chance. Thanks.

Plenty of women conceive over 40 but it's very individual after late 30s. Worth paying for an AMH blood test to check your ovarian reserve and for a scan to check your number of follicles. So you know sooner rather than later if any help may be needed.

My sister had a baby at 40 a few months ago. Good luck!

Brooklyn70 · 13/08/2024 18:20

2 months, I took the test the poster above has mentioned and was told I had the ovarian reserve of a 25 year old.

sirensong · 13/08/2024 18:21

@Brooklyn70 congrats! Can you remember what your actual results were?

PaperSheet · 13/08/2024 18:27

Started trying the month I turned 40. Over 3 years later I've just conceived via my third (and final no matter what) round of IVF. (Still early days so unsure if it will go to term)
My AMH was 7.4 pmol/L at 39 then 3.6 pmol/L at 41 so pretty low and declining rapidly.
I did get decent numbers of eggs and blasts during the ivf but the quality was terrible.

Never

Sorry, it was 13 years ago, it was the way the dr said this that has always stayed with me.

I sometimes wonder if that comment made me relax and helped me conceive so fast.

sirensong · 13/08/2024 18:45

Congratulations @PaperSheet! Did you genetically test the embryos?

Congratulations @PaperSheet! Did you genetically test the embryos?

Edited

No I didn't bother with the testing. Just took a chance. The amount I've spent over the years on so many random other tests I couldn't justify any more thousands to genetically test only 3 embryos. If there was more I might have done. But not for 3. I'm happy to take the chance and see what happens. The fact I've even got this far I'm very surprised about. I'll see what my early scan shows next week whether it's a viable pregnancy or not.

sirensong · 13/08/2024 18:58

@PaperSheet very best of luck!

I'm 39 and it took me 9 months. After 6 months I went to the doctors and had some blood tests done and all came back normal. I also took pre-conception vitamins but no idea if they contributed to me getting pregnant.

Sara1003 · 13/08/2024 22:39

Thanks for your replies. Sounds like it could take many months.

If you really want a child OP, don't dilly dally if you don't get pregnant quickly. At this stage your fertility may be declining fairly rapidly so don't arse around with acupuncture and gubbins if it doesn't happen naturally. Hit up a good IVF clinic quickly. Note 'good' - some have v low rates of success at your age group. Sorry to be Cassandra but this advice from a good friend meant I had my kids. I'm still v grateful.

OMGsamesame · 13/08/2024 22:45

No more than 2 cycles each time but it took 3 pregnancies to end up with a baby, so over a year in practice.

sel2223 · 14/08/2024 05:48

If this is what you want, please don't delay.

My first I was 36 when I fell pregnant and 37 when I gave birth and it only took 2 cycles.

After that it was almost exactly 4 years before I fell pregnant again! I'm now 41 and 7ish weeks.

We didn't have any intervention and left it up to fate if it would happen again but, yeah, 4 years of unprotected sex and not a sniff until now. My body changed considerably after I turned 40, my cycles went crazy. Just hoping this one sticks.

wickerlady · 14/08/2024 06:23

Took us about 6 cycles.

englandareamazing · 14/08/2024 06:42

I got pregnant at 39 and it took 9 months.

Cinai · 14/08/2024 07:05

2 months initially (miscarriage), then again first month of trying after my MC.

Natpat81 · 14/08/2024 15:38

It took me 7 cycles but that ended in a MMC. After that it took another 5 cycles so I was 41 when I conceived and healthy baby born. Fell pregnant again 1 year later without actively trying (age 42, period just came back after BF) but ended in a MMC again.
I had tests done though after 6 months (not the AMH one, I was about to get that done when I conceived again).
You definitely gave a chance, but it’s completely dependent on the individual.
Best of luck

Olika · 14/08/2024 15:51

I MC just before I turned 38 and it took us 2,5 years so I was 40.5 when I got pregnant. I had scans and blood tests to check I was still ok, and I started taking Ubiquinol and Proceive max (plus 16:8 fasting as I was overweight) 1.5 months before I finally got pregnant.
