Fresh day 3 or day 5 transfer

Hi I need some advice. I don’t want to Google too much so I’m asking here.

I’m going through IVF and have previously had a failed day 5 transfer (FET - didn’t implant) and another FET which ended in a missed miscarriage at 8 weeks. I have a year old son from a fresh day 3 transfer.
I’m 40 and need to decide whether to go for a fresh day 3 or day 5 transfer. Please advice. Any pros/cons.

Thank you everyone.

Not me personally but one of my closest friends had IVF for her daughter and I’m sure she went for day 5 as they were associated with higher success rates at her clinic. It was something to do with the extended time meaning the embryo reaches blastocyst stage and so a greater chance of success I think? Worth doing your own research and asking your clinic for their advice though of course. Good luck x

Hi, most clinics only transfer day 5 (mine did) and they only transfer day 3 if of lower quality, not suitable for freezing and it possibly not reaching day 5 in the lab. If you had success before, and your clinic is willing to transfer day 3, I don’t see why not? You could also do a day 5 fresh transfer if you’re doing a new round.
I personally would always go for day 5. Lots of luck xxx

Hi @Butterfly8719 thank you for your reply. As mentioned before I don’t want to Google too much because it’s overwhelming and makes me anxious but why would you go for a fresh day 5 transfer instead of day 3? Don’t they say it’s better in than out? My concern is that I’ve had 2 failed day 5 FET and a successful day 3 fresh transfer. I’m so confused.

Statistically day 5 have a better chance of success, which is why a lot of clinics won’t transfer anything less. Sadly it is just a numbers game, and ultimately it is down the the embryo quality and the uterine environment. It could be that your day 3 was the perfect embryo and your day 5’s were abnormal (by chance). If you’ve tried 2 x day 5 FETs, then maybe go back to what worked before? I’d only say day 5 for me is it’s all my clinic do and all I know x
