No period post pill - how long should it be?

I stopped taking the pill, had withdrawal bleed as normal and it has now been 56 days and no AF, no breakthrough bleeding- nada...

Just wondered if anyone knows at what point I should start to be concerned. There is no chance I am pregnant but we want to start trying later this year, so wanted to get cycle back to normal. I was on the pill for around 8 years without any breaks.

TIA.

I had withdrawl bleed, nothing the following month, then period 28 days after that (so56 days)then conceived dd1 2 weeks later

shoptilidrop · 14/04/2008 08:11

hi, i went almost 6 months after the withdrawl bleed. Im now 3 weeks after af and still havent ovulated, so think ts going to be another long cycle.

fruitl0ops2muchchoc · 14/04/2008 09:34

Hi Cosmo I think it can take a very long time to get your cycles back on track. Depending on your age, GP's dont tend to do anything to help until you've been TTC for a year. Dont quote me though, by all means go and see your GP but dont expect too much from him/her. Tell you GP you would really like to go for some blood tests just to rule anything out - and be firm! Maybe start tracking your cycles by temping. You might get an idea of what's going on.
Good luck!

There is no real evidence to suggest that the pill is responsible for failure to ovulate but what it can do is mask symptoms of any underlying problem.

Sometimes such problems can be caused by hormonal imbalances so it would not do any harm to have a blood test done. This will enable the GP to see what your hormone levels are like. The two that are usually tested for early in a cycle (if these are irregular it can be done according to calendar days) are LH and FSH. If these are awry (particularly if LH is higher than FSH) then ovulation is affected. It can be treated but sometimes assistance from a gynae is needed.

Thanks a lot for the replies. I think I will give it four months and if no period might go to the doctors and see if she'll do some blood tests. Think periods were fairly regular, every 30 days, before I went on the pill, but it's hard to remember that far back TBH.

Hi Cosmo. Very similar position to you, i came off pill after about 8 years as want to get cycle back to normal. Was nearly 4 months before i had my first period (i did book GP appointment but came on before it anyway), second cycle was about 47 or so days, so hoping it's just taking a while.

Like you i can't really remember what my cycles were like before the pill anyway! If they don't start getting more regular in the next couple of cycles i'll go to my GP.

Cosmogirl · 14/04/2008 19:58

Hi Lolly, thanks for posting. It is reassuring to hear someone else is going through a similar thing. Bet the minute I book a Dr's appointment I come on too! It is just odd not knowing where I am with my cycle - keep thinking I am about to start, then nothing. Very weird.

There were a few times i was convinced i was coming on, and booking the GP appointment may have helped as i stopped stressing and thought it would get sorted at some point.

I think after being on the pill for so long your body kind of forgets what to do, and everyone varies in how long it takes to get back to normal. Hopefully your period will show up soon as i know it's annoying not knowing what's going on..

Cosmogirl · 14/04/2008 20:45

Yeah, I think my body must be totally confused! Kind of makes me glad I did come off it sooner rather than later, since I am taking so long to regulate. Have you started ttc yet? We were thinking Oct/Nov time. I had assumed that by then periods would be back to normal and would be able to pinpoint ovulation etc...might still be the case but I am doubtful now!

Hi, I stopped taking the pill in March 07, had a withdrawal bleed and then had no AF for over a year! In the meantime I was investigated and told I had PCOS. In otherwords the pill was masking an underlying ovulation problem, even though my AF were regular before going on the pill. Almost 1 year to the day I came off the pill, I had an AF, but that doesn't confirm I'm ovulating. I'd wait about 4 months and if you've still had no AF, go and see your GP. Your body may just be taking it's time to address the hormone balance!

Lolly12 · 14/04/2008 21:02

Am also glad i came off it when i did, as want to wait until my cycle is fairly regular before TTC (hopefully in a few months).

Am sure you'll be fine by Oct/Nov and you've obviously done the right thing, as if you'd stayed on the pill right before TTC you'd be just stressing when that's the last thing you need to be doing!

Cosmogirl · 14/04/2008 21:05

Hi Scooby, wow - a year! Think I'll be pulling my hair out if it gets to that point! Luckily we are not ttc at the moment, so not feeling overly stressed or worried about lack of AF- just a bit bemused as to where it is. I'll give it 4 months then see if the Dr has any words of wisdom. As I said to Lolly, it is almost impossible to remember cycle post pill. I know I had regular periods, but who knows if ovulation was normal etc...
Hope things work out OK for you.

X-posts Lolly. Those were my thoughts exactly, didn't want to be ttc straight off pill and spending a fortune on pregnancy tests coz AF was all over the place. Good luck for when you start trying.

Thanks Cosmo. I'll keep checking to see how things work out for you, and let you know if and when my cycle sorts itself out!

Cosmogirl · 14/04/2008 21:40

That would be cool. Think I will be shouting from the rooftops when AF arrives! Am a regular on this board, usually hanging around in the 'waiting to conceive' thread

Have you tried acupuncture? I was in exactly the same situation - didn't have a period for 5 months until tried acupuncture.

Have a look at your diet too and make sure you're nourishing yourself properly - seemingly I was eating too fruit and not enough veg!

Also try abdominal massage - rub your tummy for 5 minutes in a clockwise direction morning and night.

Parsley tea helps too - but make sure you're definitely not pregnant before trying this.

Can you tell I was frantically trying everything under the sun?

Cosmogirl · 15/04/2008 20:15

Hi, no haven't tried acupuncture - am intrigued by it though so may look into that if AF continues to be MIA. Think my diet is reasonably OK. Will definitely try the tummy massage. CD60 tomorrow and throughout the wait I have had moments when I thought I was coming on - crampy pains and such - but still nothing, no breakthrough bleeding or discharge of any interest. Big fat nothing really. Am defo not pregnant though, so at least that worry isn't playing on my mind or causing undue stress.
Thanks for your advice.
