For those who are still between 1 dpo and 6 dpo, do you plan to do a 7 dpo progesterone blood test to confirm ovulation?

The title is my question. Thank you!

Does a rise in BBT always 100% guarantee that ovulation happens for sure? I am curious.😀

The only way to be 100% certain is via ultrasound after suspected ovulation date. Because with Luteinized Unruptured Follicle Syndrome you can still get an LH peak + BBT rise + all the usual mid cycle symptoms. A scan shows the status of the vacated follicle/ corpus luteum.

However, most women with regular cycles who get an LH peak and BBT rise will be ovulating. If you do a progesterone test note that the 30 level you're supposed to reach is now seen as relatively arbitrary.

Anonxo · 08/07/2024 00:04

Outside of other medical issues I’ve always found bbt to be accurate as long as you sleep for 3-4 hrs uninterrupted and do it first thing

1woodpecker · 08/07/2024 06:56

I’ve done it twice before and tempted to do it again. I use BBT which shows I ovulate but my previous 21 day tests where just below 30 - usually 30 indicates ovulation. So it is a bit of a puzzle and the test didn’t make it much clearer! I think I am ovulating but its “weak”, with low progesterone.

Apart from doing the test, can you feel that you have low progesterone?

Hmm I don’t think so. I think it affects things like sleep and I do sleep badly, and weight gain. But don’t think I can feel it. I also have very light periods but not sure if that’s connected either!

That is useful to know. I am a light sleeper but I have been sleeping quite well without waking up during the night. My period is normal however I have had 2 MCs so I wonder if they could affect the level of progesterone. I will check all my hormone levels tomorrow as it will be 7 dpo for me. I did one last cycle (after CP) and they were all normal. I had light spotting on CD16 of this cycle so that makes me a bit concerned.

The 7 dpo progesterone blood test result is back.
My progesterone level is 24.4 nmol/l which is 7.7 ng/ml. Do you count it as weak ovulation or no ovulation?

That’s fairly similar to mine - that latest one I did was about 25. I BBT chart so I’m fairly certain I did ovulate as had a temperature shift just after a positive OPK, so I’m guessing it is a weak ovulation.

Are you taking any vitamins to boost your progesterone level?

You have almost certainly ovulated. The consultant gynaecologist I saw last week said that the 30 nmol/L level was kind of plucked out of the air. Several trusts have accordingly updated their info, eg:
https://www.nbt.nhs.uk/severn-pathology/requesting/test-information/progesterone

"Repeat results >12 nmol/L, in the presence of regular cycles, is consistent with normal ovulation."

You could easily also have reached a higher level a day earlier or later.

Yes I’m taking vitamin B6 and Vitamin C. I’ve considered Angus Castus/Vitex but I’m a bit wary as heard some people found it made cycles worse? So I’ve held off so far.
I’m trying to increase protein intake as apparently that can help.

1woodpecker · 09/07/2024 18:50

I will just add, I don’t dispute that I am ovulating, I’m concerned my progesterone level might be affecting successful implantation and carrying it forward? Rather than it suggesting I’m not ovulating. Not sure if OP you’ve got the same concern or diff (don’t want to hijack!)

I did one on 7 dpo last cycle after CP and it was well above 12 nmol/L. (My progesterone level was 59.4 nmol/L which was 18.68 ng/ml)
Thank you for reassurance! Really really appreciate it!!

Last cycle I took all extra vitamins which are supposed to increase progesterone levels and got a very good number on 7 dpo. So I wanted to do an experiment this cycle so I stopped taking them apart from vitamin C just to see what my real-ish level of progesterone is at.
I also drink Kefir often for breakfast which might help too?
Low progesterone might be the reason for my CP.

We are on the same page!! I am also worried about my low progesterone! After readying the blood test result this afternoon, I immediately resumed taking vitamin B6, C, E, Zinc and Magnesium! I will do that every day with my prenatal vitamins until AF.
If I get a BFP this cycle, I will continue to take them!

I didn't have ovulation discharge.
If you don't mind me asking, what made you do a progesterone test on NHS? What kind of post ovulation tests did you do?
I had 2 MCs within 6 months and didn't qualify for a referral to recurrent clinic. Nowadays I am very nervous about my hormone levels because 2 MCs could screw them up. I do a blood test once month just to check everything is normal.
