TTC when aged 38 and DP 46

I’ve just turned 38. DP is about to turn 46. We have been ttc for 6 months now.

I have 1DC (aged 9) from a previous relationship, I was fortunate to fall pregnant within the first few months of trying last time.

This time I am fully expecting it to take a long time now, due to our ages, however part of me thinks perhaps we should just accept that we are too old stop. We are not in a position to afford private fertility treatment, and would not qualify on the nhs, due to my existing dc. Has anyone managed to fall pregnant st similar ages to me and my DP? Would love to hear success stories.

Hi @Lalaland5 I'm 37 and my DH 43. We began trying at the beginning of the year for our second and fell pregnant on second cycle. Sadly it ended in MC in April but I thought it was positive that we conceived so quickly as I thought it might take a while. Hoping to start trying again over the coming month or 2 so fingers crossed it goes well next time. I'm sure it'll happen for you very soon. It's normal to take 6 months to a year but I know that amount of time can feel like an eternity when Ttc, especially as we get older. Good luck xx

We’re similar ages. It was around 5 months for us trying and gave birth to healthy baby boy at end of last year. I get that you start to think it’s not going to happen as it feels like it’s never ending but a lot of couples with no issues take a year or so.

Yes, multiple times and both older than you and DP :)

@CosmicLove sorry about your loss, I hope you manage to conceive quickly again.

Thanks all, putting my mind at ease a bit, the I’ve googled, the more I’ve felt that there is 0% chance of conceiving. I guess I need to try and be patient and hope for the best

Almost everyone at my work has their babies late 30s +
Anyone in their twenties is looked at like they've chosen a teen pregnancy route almost.

Everyone has their own personal clock but in general I'd say it's not too late at all. Someone's sense of this seems to be entirely governed by their peers/ social circle. I've seen threads on here with women freaking out about time because they're 30 and everyone they know already has three children. I can only assume these cases are outside of London.

See if you can get some initial blood tests and a semen screening from your GP so you can better understand your situation, or consider paying.

Not me personally but my sister had her first at 38, after several years of trying and unexplained MC’s. She then had her second at 41. My mom also had me at 42. So it definitely is possible! As above, a lot of women are having children later so it’s not abnormal and definitely still have good chances, but it can also take a little longer and can be a bit riskier. If it’s something you definitely both want, go for it!

Hi

I've just turned 39, my partner is 40. I've never been pregnant, this is my third month trying. I'm dpo11, I don't think you are too old. Keep trying and try to keep positive xx

Crokepark · 17/06/2024 21:44

Hey, OP. I had my second at 42 naturally. Obviously the chances are lower if you're older but it can still happen.
