Has anyone tried this - if so, how often and how long for? Did you go to someone who specialises in “fertility acupuncture” or is it just standard acupuncture?

Hi,

I've just seen your comment as I was trying to see if anyone on here was wondering about fertility acupuncture. I am an acupuncturist (plus a mum, hence why I'm on here), and I do see women and some men for fertility reasons. There are acupuncturists that specialise in fertility, and also some excellent acupuncturists that treat people for all types of reasons, including fertility. The great thing about acupuncture is that we go by how you are, your pulse in your wrists and colour/shape of your tongue and choose the points accordingly.

Not sure where you are in the world, but in some countries one needs to be a doctor (!) in order to do acupuncture (France I think), and in the UK there's minimal regulation. However most of us in the UK have done a full 3 year degree in chinese medicine and acupuncture. There are different types of it, and the style I do (Stems and branches, five element) is very gentle, and with minimal needles (often only 2 or 3 needles). It's soooo relaxing, I really would urge you to find a nice friendly acupuncturist and try it :-)
Most of the fertility clinics in the UK even suggest acupuncture....which given how reluctant the "western" medics are with promoting alternative therapies, shows that there really is something going for acupuncture for boosting fertility etc. I find my IVF patients report fewer side effects from the IVf drugs when they've added in the acupuncture, plus their womb lining thickens up really well.

I think it's always best to go and see a trained acupuncturist, however I am about to launch a fertility acupuncture app! Hence why I was searching to see what sort of threads there were these days. No doubt I'm probably not allowed to mention this here...but if you can't make the time to see an acupuncturist 1:1, then this will really help. it's called Be Positive appYOUpuncture.
If you've got any other questions about acupucnture and your fertility journey, then please do just reply/message me.

Good luck with this next exciting bit of your life :-)

Emma xx

@emsthevet hey, sorry to jump on this.
I had two pregnancy losses last year, after both my cycles regulated really quickly 26-29 day cycles, ovulation between day 12-15, period bleed for 3 days normal flow, my norm before both pregnancies. I had my hormones checked and they all came back good.
But I had read a lot of positive stories about acupuncture so decided to give it a try. Went to see a fertility specialised acupuncturist.
Since going my ovulation is now between days 11 and 17, my period bleeding has become bizarre and I have more PMS symptoms than I ever had. Had my hormones redone and they’re now out of balance, which I can feel in myself anyway.
My acupuncturist said that things could be thrown off a bit before they got better, but I went 2-3 times a month for 4 months and it didn’t get even slightly better so I’ve now stopped.
My main question is will my body go back to its “normal” now that I’ve stopped? Is it just a case of waiting it out for a few months? Is there anything I can do to encourage my body to go back to normal?

I saw a fertility acupuncturist when TTC DC2 after 2 miscarriages (both first trimester).
My luteal phase was short when it never had been before. I'd been talking to a friend who had had similar issues and she recommended an acupuncturist who had helped her.

In short, the acupuncturist was IMO excellent, and I credit her with lengthening my luteal phase and enabling me to get and stay pregnant. She was also incredibly supportive. I became pregnant with DC2 naturally when I was nearly 43. I would recommend finding an experienced acupuncturist specialising in fertility issues.

sorry to be a downer but there really isn't solid scientific evidence that acupuncture works, for fertility or anything else. don't waste your money on it.
