Just wondering..
Took 15 months to conceive DD1. Various issues on both sides. Was just about to go down he IVF route when it happened naturally, the month after being treated for endometriosis.
DD1 is only 8 months but I'm not getting any younger and think we should start trying again now but the thought that it MAY happen straight away is a bit daunting..still it may take ages again if we're lucky enough to have another one at all.

I'd like to know this too as it took about two and a half years to conceive DS, who is eight months old........

Jem, this is impossible to tell unfortunately. I know people who have taken months/years to conceive 1st child and then no time to conceive 2nd and subsequent (my godchild took three years for her parents to conceive, her little sister was conceived in 3 months!), but equally I know of couples who had as many problems getting pg 2nd time around as they did the first.

I have heard that your body is supposed to be more receptive to pregnancy in the first two years after your first was born, but I'm not sure if this is an old wives' tale or not. Do you have a sympathetic GP you could talk to about this? Would it be such a disaster if you got pg straightaway? If age is a factor too then I would just start trying and see what happens. We can only conceive with IVF (I'm 7 months now) but we're intending to start another cycle when this one is about 9 mths. I'd rather have a couple of years of exhaustion than leave it too late and not be able to have anymore.

My mum took 2 years to conceive my sister, then me and my brothers came along very rapidly afterwards (she ended up with 4 under 3, although my brothers are twins!) and it was great fun (mum loved it too honest!).

Good luck!

I know there's no logic to any of this at all!
No- it wouldn't be a disaster at all if it happened soon, just interested in other peoples's stories.
We are technically 'trying' but that would imply we actually have sex, let alone unprotected sex! (Not high on the list of priorities with an 8 month year old)

Not that it took ages with ds1 but about a year, on metformin for pcos.
then we started having 'let's just see what happens' sex, thinking baby 2 would take some time and i might need to back on the drugs when, oops, ds2

going to get minipill sorted soon, want a bigger gap than 20 months next time!

my parents took five years to conceive my eldest brother and then had 3 of us within 5 years !

I have heard it said that each pregnancy throws your hormones up in the air and it can change things completely. I've been the other way round, conceived twice no probs (although lost the second one) and now can't conceive.

Good luck !

18months or so for ds1, ds2 first time started trying! (ds1 approaching 2 luckily)

curleyshirley · 04/04/2008 19:49

and yes for me too. Took 9 months to concieve dd, and found out two days ago am pg when not even trying (though not 'not' trying) and breastfeeding. DD is nearly 9 months. Big shock but now quite excited

hazeyjane · 04/04/2008 19:58

We took 7 years to conceive dd1, after 2 miscarriages, fertility treatment (clomid and laparoscopy) and a molar pregnancy, after which we couldn't try agagin for nearly 2 years! We conceived pretty much as soon as we decided that we were going to stop trying - go figure!

After having dd1 (long long labour and bad tear) I swore never again, and besides at 37, and with our previous troubles, I couldn't bear the thought of having to try again. Discovered I was pregnant when dd1 was 6 months old.

So now have 2 lovely dd's with a 14 month gap (now 10 months and 2), it has been hard but fantastic.

ds1: 18 months
ds2: 2 months
