Hello,
I'm a bit of a lurker who's decided to make a foray into posting .
As the title says really - I just wondered if there were any diabetic mums on here, and how they found the whole pregnancy experience. I've been diabetic for 13 years and my HbA1cs are good (currently 6.7) and I'm shortly going to a "pre-conception" clinic at my hospital. All seems a bit daunting though and I've sort of convinced myself that things are going to be REALLY difficult

xx

Hello grievous. I am a diabetic on a pump. Been a diabetic for 34 years. I am 7 weeks pregnant at the mo. Ds is 4. I have been to pre-conc clinic.
Ask away .

Hello, wow quick response! I suppose I just want to know (sorry to be v nosey!) if you feel your pregnancies were/are a lot more complicated because of your diabetes? Did you feel a lot of stress and pressure to maintain excellent blood sugars?

Yes, there is no denying it, my first pregnancy was a nightmare. It was really quite traumatic, for dh more than me. I was so all over the place. Even though I was trying to monitor very closely.
I had always had good control and good warning signs prior to pregnancy, so this came as a REAL shock.
But many others, and many on Mumsnet, have had much easier rides than me, so don't let me paint a bad picture.

I think most diabeteics are considered to be high risk, during pregnancy, but then they do do their very best to monitor and support you.
Where are you grevious, is your clinic a very good one ?

grievousangel · 03/04/2008 16:34

Sorry to hear you had a rough time first time around. Hope things are better for you this time. Don't worry about scaring me, I feel it's best to be prepared. I'm a born pessimist anyway! Did you feel you got enought support from medical staff etc.? Was it mainly hypos you had a lot of trouble with? I do worry about that as I have borderline hypo unawareness anyway and dh is convinced I'm going to walk out in front of a car or something in a confused state one of these days

Me too. Oh you are in the BEST place. I mean Prof is the best in the WORLD. You do know that, don't you ?

Oblomov · 03/04/2008 16:42

I had a bad car crash and nearly died. Plus dh did lose me, literally, when I went missing and was found hypo, 8 hours later.
Let me really scare you
No seriuously, mine was very very bad at times and quite good at others. It you prepared yourself for mine. Then I think you will find it a walk in the park !!
Kings did support me. Helen was brilliant. And Prof too.

grievousangel · 03/04/2008 16:42

That's reassuring! I do feel lucky to go there, my control was so crap before I got chance to go on DAFNE in 2002, and it was sheer chance we ended up moving to that area of London. Looking at my original post I should have said that i've been db for 23 years not 13 - doesn't time fly And I'm also glad to hear your experiences haven't put you off having another dc

OMG poor you with the car crash. Our posts keep crossing! Yes, Helen is great isn't she?

I live in Surrey, but was refered to Kings, once pregnant, becasue my control went to pot. I was put on a pump and have been under Prof, on one ever since.
Kings is a nightmare for me to get to, it is a 4 hour round trip and you well know that waiting times can be a nightmare.
But, it is the best place for me, I know, so it is just something we have to deal with, in order to have a second child.

Oblomov · 03/04/2008 16:47

I spoke to Helen today, with all my readings. When I see her and Prof, I feel safe and like I am getting the best service.
Yes, we must slow down with our typing and not x post - ha ha.

Oblomov · 03/04/2008 16:48

How old are you grevious ? I am 35. I had ds when 31 ( obviously) and a mmc last Nov.

grievousangel · 03/04/2008 16:57

Sorry to hear about your mmc. I'm 28 now, but plan to go to a couple of pre-con clinics, see how things go, and then start trying after I turn 29 next spring. I've also managed to convince myself it will take years for me to get pg and I'll crack up under the strain of trying to maintain perfect sugars lol. I'm such a ray of sunshine
