Male factor infertility

We’ve recently got our semen analysis results back
14 million per ml
35 million total count
motility: 32%
progressive motility: 15% :(
mophology: 1%

are these numbers hopeless for natural conception? Has anyone conceived naturally with similar results?

Following this and hoping someone might be able to shed some light for us.. results for DH below -
6.3 million per ml count
1% morphology
8% progressive motility

feeling truly lost and devastated

Roses5678 · 13/05/2024 16:42

Not sure if this gives any hope, we had results back last year, count was about 6million and advised we may need ICSI.
Fell pregnant naturally 2 months later

Familyfirst12 · 15/05/2024 14:48

Thank you @Roses5678 that is music to my ears!!

Elisabeth3468 · 16/05/2024 17:43

Just wanted to write on here as we have struggled with infertility with male factor too.
First time we tried for 18 months with no success and advised to have icsi because sperm was so low . This resulted in our beautiful 2 year old.
Fast forward we start trying for number 2 when he's about 15 months.
Get a new semen analysis done and the results are bad. To put it in perspective 1.5million/ml and 1% progressive motility, couldn't even measure morphology. Classed as severe.
Honestly was so upset and knowing our chances of conception are so low. Well it was coming up to a year of trying and I've fallen pregnant. It's early stages so I'm still holding my breath but it shows low sperm count doesn't necessarily mean it's not going to happen! Honestly I'd lost all hope.
The only difference this month is that he'd started taking proxeed (it's expensive but has great reviews). I don't know if it's that though because he only took it for 2 weeks and then I fell pregnant and it states it takes at least 3 months to see a difference in sperm count because of the sperm cycle or something. He was having cold showers as well so maybe that had a factor? He's generally very fit and healthy and exercises 6 times a week too but that's nothing new. We know his low sperm count is because of a varicocele and he was going to get it operated on.
Anyway I'm rambling, my point is, don't feel all is lost!!!

FlyOnTheWall89 · 16/05/2024 20:10

Hi! Another success story for you. My DH had around 40ml total count with 0% morphology. Other parameters were good from memory.... but that is low / borderline count and obvs terrible morphology. He started on Proxeed and had a repeat test 3 months later and the morphology had jumped to 9%. Everything else about the same. We went to see a urologist to get more checks done and I had a HSG to check my tubes - they were all clear. We were a month from starting IVF with ICSI and the doctor gave us a 5% chance of natural conception.... and I conceived naturally - it took 15 months in the end. Fast forward to now and my daughter is 14 months and I'm 4 months pregnant with baby no.2. We presumed it would take ages again. We have no reason to believe his sperm count will have changed.... and his lifestyle v much slipped back into what perhaps maybeeee caused low morphology. HAVE HOPE! There is absolutely a chance every month xxx

@Roses5678 amazing news :) what was your motility and mophology?

OP posts:
Leviloo · 18/05/2024 21:03

@Elisabeth3468 was your progressive motility 1% when you fell pregnant? Thankyou for your story it hasn’t given me hope 🥰

Well he had the test done in February this year. I fell pregnant in the March. So I can't imagine it would've been much different xxx

@Elisabeth3468 Thankyou! This has given me so much hope!

Our beautiful son was conceived through icsi, after terrible terrible sperm results - can't remember numbers now. By the time we had the icsi they said dps sperm was much improved and good enough for conventional IVF. They only went ahead with icsi because that's what he'd signed the paperwork for and was already at home.

He drank lots of V8 and took selenium ang Coq10

Leviloo · 19/05/2024 13:52

@theotherfossilsister im so glad we have science to help us achieve our dreams! Hoping we can have success with icis even if natural never happens 🙏🏻

@Leviloo, the lab that we used didn't test for morphology and motility as the count was under 10million.

It was pretty much the following month we conceived, we had purchased the supplements as recommended but wanted to begin taken them once home from our holiday, he may have taken about a weeks worth of Impryl.
We only dtd once the cycle that we conceived.
We didn't alter our habits that month, as we were away and he was still smoking, I was drinking.
The only thing that I could put it down to was that I lost about 2stone.

Maybe after being told we may have difficulty and we had answers with results etc it just took the pressure off.

I still can't believe how lucky we are to this day. I really hope all work out for you both.

Leviloo · 23/05/2024 18:36

@Roses5678 I bet it was amazing to find out you had naturally conceived! It does show that it can happen with male factor! I didn’t realise they didn’t test for motility or mophology if it was under ten million! Was 6 million the total count?

My partners total count was 4.5mil! So very low. Just shows it can happen. I am on the younger side (just turned 28) so not sure whether that makes a difference x

We got pregnant with twins with a count of less than a couple of million and then twice with a count of 12 million so not hopeless and 1% morphology (I can't remember the motility numbers).

15 million is considered normal so you're not that far below the peramiters

Wow that’s amazing! Especially to be blessed with twins 🥰 was a couple of million your total count? Yeah the count is borderline but the motility and mophology is low :(

Yes a couple of million was total count so probably only a couple of hundred left when morphology and motility taken into account. Sadly we lost one of the twins but the other is a thriving two year old now. Look we got lucky and despite a low egg reserve I seem to come from the most fertile family ever!

Id definitely try with those numbers or try and get them improved a bit through better diet and supplements. But don't spend years doing it. But it's definitely not hopeless with those numbers

Leviloo · 26/05/2024 17:04

@Bells3032 well he drives a forklift for 40 hours a week so I’m wondering if that’s contributing and making sperm a bit hot! Going to get him a cooking cushion and hope it helps 🙏🏻

Me and my husband tried naturally for 18 months, we had some tests done at month 12 which showed a low sperm count at 3m per ml and our fertility clinic at the time said it might be hormones causing it but if not we will have to do ICSI. After some research, we decided to visit Dr Johnathan Ramsay but he was on a 3 month waiting list, in the meantime though my husband worked incredibly hard by not drinking, cutting out caffeine, eating healthy, lots of tomatoes, taking impryl and vitamin D. We then visited Dr Ramsay and his count was 15m per ml!!! Dr Ramsay explained that his hormones were a little low and put him on medication and he did have a larger varicocele which may need to be treated by operation. He also said it was slightly sticky which could be caused by the varicocele or a certain germ which are very common, he did further tests and we returned in 6 weeks. The tests showed that we had a common germ called Gardnerella vaginalis which was stopping the sperm from swimming free. He gave us some antibiotics and also told us to book the operation in. We took the antibiotics and a few weeks later we booked the operation in but on the day we booked it, I got a positive pregnancy test!!!! The best day of our lives!!! I really recommend Dr Ramsay, he is honestly the best in the business after two visits to him, our dreams came true!!
