I went to the doctor's to try and get my HCG tested because of multiple early losses and my doctor smiled as he told me my urine test that he just took was negative. He then looked at the pics of my positive tests on my phone and told me they were negative and that the lines needed to be darker. He said there was no reason to do HCG test and implied I wasn't pregnant at all. I burst into tears and left.

I feel so so sad that I'm probably losing this bean and my notes at the GP will make me look delusional 😥 I've complained to PALS but don't think it'll do any good...

I've included the pics of the tests I showed him...

I'm not familiar with these tests as my children are older now, but the one on the right, wouldn't the left window have a much darker line if you were pregnant? The faint line there is just showing where the darker line would be, isn't it?

MILTOBE · 05/04/2024 12:36

What I mean is, on the photo on the right, wouldn't both lines have to be equally dark if you were pregnant?

CatchHimDerry · 05/04/2024 12:37

Aww sorry to hear this OP

Its not acceptable but they can be like this, I had a similar thing with EPAU in October, talking to me like I was an idiot over the whole situation.

The EPAU classed my 10 HGC as “not pregnant” which is where they sometimes get this from.
I think generally speaking its below 5 for a non-pregnant female as baseline.

Im on number 6 chemical in a row now, mostly with faint lines like these but some strong ones too.

A line is a line and you are pregnant.

Whether it progresses is out of your hands lovely, all you can do it try to relax and hope for the best. Crap and hard as that is.

I know how horrible it sounds, but genuinely they can’t do a lot for you until they investigate further whether there’s anything underlying.

They can’t influence the outcome in any way, a scan wouldn’t show anything until 6-7 weeks.

Mine are going to refer to recurrent miscarriage. Could you request a different GP and discuss this as a possibility with them?

Until then I’m just trying various things off my own research and see if one sticks!

Have you had any blood tests offered even for any deficiencies etc? X

CatchHimDerry · 05/04/2024 12:40

@MILTOBE no, that’s how LH ovulation strips work, but pregnancy tests will only show ANY line if you have conceived and are producing HCG

Unless you have another medical issue causing it, which would be rare and highly unlikely.

The strength of line is a much debated issue on mumsnet but a lot of people have experiences whereby if they are faint like this and stay this way, the pregnancy is not progressing as it should

DancefloorAcrobatics · 05/04/2024 12:42

💐 I'm sorry and think he should at least offered you another test there and then.

Maybe do another one tomorrow and go back, but maybe see the nurse practitioner or just say you are pregnant and book a midwife, hopfully she'll be more helpful and understanding.

MyselfWho · 05/04/2024 13:15

Thanks for your replies everyone. The tests are definitely positive. The instructions say any line is a positive even faint lines... Just pretty convinced this is a chemical now 😔

I can't see anyone tomorrow because it's the weekend and they're not open for appointments. I rang my GP back and they just said they couldn't help at all.

All that's helping right now is that I know I can't do much about it except try to relax so I'm going to try to put it out of my mind for now and just hope things magically change.

I just really thought this time was it, because I got my first squinter positive at 9dpo and my last chemicals haven't shown til 13-14 dpo. I hadn't been early testing as a rule but felt so pregnant and couldn't resist.

So sorry you had a bad experience. When I was expecting my oldest, I did 3 home pregnancy tests which were faint positives, the third one I did was from the same urine sample as I took to the Drs to be tested. That came back negative, which caused a lot of stress and confusion. I did a digital which again showed i was pregnant, took another sample to the Drs and it was confirmed I was pregnant.
I would say all your tests show faint positives, hopefully the line will get darker. Fingers crossed for you.

MyselfWho · 05/04/2024 13:41

@hlc123 thanks. Your story really helps me keep positive. I have to remind myself that I'm still testing positive even if the doctor doesn't think so, and there's been a slight bit of progression in my tests so I'll just see what tomorrow brings 💛

DragonFly98 · 05/04/2024 13:44

The tests are positive but depending on what day of your cycle it may be a chemical. I suggest seeing a different GP and discussing progesterone to take next time or now if your lines get darker. GP was ignorant and unkind.

mylifeisprettygood · 05/04/2024 13:47

I had a pregnancy test that was faint like yours and it meant I was pregnant. I didn't believe it as I was 40 and had pcos but as I continued to keep taking the tests in disbelief they got darker and darker positive lines over time 🤷🏻‍♀️ I thought two lines was positive.

Just wanted to say, my pregnancy test was fainter than that at same sort of time and I now have an 18mo. Really hope you get the outcome you want. Change doctor asap though, he sounds like a twat. You would not get even a faint line if your body wasn't producing HCG💐

MyselfWho · 05/04/2024 14:05

@CatchHimDerry sorry you've had so many chemicals. They are really soul-crushing.

I have had my bloods done last month, which came back "normal" but I haven't actually seen the results myself. I will try to get referred to recurrent miscarriages too as I want to know why these beans don't stick, but I don't know if they'll take this loss seriously. My GP said it's been put on my file that I'm currently not pregnant and that they "couldn't confirm" that I'd tested positive at home 😮‍💨. I'm hoping to see a woman doctor next time and hopefully she won't be so awful!

OP posts:
CatchHimDerry · 05/04/2024 14:23

@MyselfWho yes definitely ask for a lady doctor. I did this as the male one I had was beyond useless.
The lady one was MUCH better and took it all seriously.

Theyve said my results are “normal” too, but I’ve since learned that NHS reference ranges for things such as TSH for thyroid etc. are actually way higher than what would need to be for a successful pregnancy.

My prolactin is too high as well, but since it fluctuates they aren’t bothered and said it’s the chemicals doing it.

This month im trying B6 and Magnesium along with high dose folic and high dose Vit D. See where that gets me

Its all a mystery, but hopefully we all get there in the end ❤️

Newpancake92 · 05/04/2024 19:09

A line is a line. You were clearly pregnant.
It seems the GP thinks only dark lines matter and doesn't understand the concept of hcg increasing over time. Sounds like the GP needs some further education.
Sorry this happened to you ❤️

Newpancake92 · 05/04/2024 19:11

I'm sorry I didn't meant to say you were pregnant but you are.

Corinthiana · 05/04/2024 19:15

Hang on - the test that he did was negative?
So you're not pregnant, and he thought you had misread the tests?
Sorry, just clarifying. It's upsetting if you've had losses, and also frustrating. I hope your referral comes through soon.

WonderingWanda · 05/04/2024 19:25

Sorry about your experience with the gp op. Can I assume you are still quite early? You mentioned the first positive was 9dpo and then you have a progression of 4 tests. In which case it's still so early and if your period is late and you have a line then you aren't out yet. I don't know what sensitivity the test the gp used was but I suspect if it's not a very sensitive test and you didn't use the first urine of the day it could still not show up on some tests.

I agree the gp was dismissive but the reality is the nhs is unlikely to do blood tests for you and it won't help at this stage. It's so hard after a loss but just try to be strong and work with the facts you have....you have a line on a test....is af late yet? If so that's another great sign, if not hang in there....still so early.

Wishing you lots of luck!

curlupandvanishforever · 05/04/2024 19:31

I don’t have any advice but just wanted to say I’m sorry, that’s an awful, frustrating experience. All my early positive tests looked like your ones - there’s no way I would have looked at them and thought they were negative 💐

It seems the GP doesn't realise a faint line = pregnancy so the test he had taken might as well be positive.

MyselfWho · 06/04/2024 13:03

Thanks so much everyone. My tests this morning were darker again so I'm tentatively hopeful... I'm guessing the doctor either misread the test or it wasn't sensitive enough.

I went to get my bloods done because after my last loss the GP told me to come and get HCG tested, but this doctor disagreed. I wish I'd never gone tbh because the stress I went through wasn't worth it🙄

I'm officially due my period today (could have been yesterday but I'm pretty sure today) so I'm 14dpo now. I'm just hoping the lines are faint because it's early days. Really hope I keep seeing progression and hopefully I'll feel confident enough to stop testing in a few days 🤞🏼

I would get hold of a FRER and also make an appointment on Monday for a different GP to ask for progesterone. You are definitely pregnant with line progression.

Overthebow · 06/04/2024 13:09

You’re only 14dpo and your line from today is definitely pregnant. I would assume the test the doctor uses may not be as sensitive so unlikely to show as positive before your missed period. I’m surprised they saw you so early as there’s not much anyone can do so early on. I hope your lines continue to get darker over the next week but it looks positive for this point in your cycle.

Corinthiana · 06/04/2024 13:14

Yes, those tests definitely look positive - congratulations and best of luck x
