My doctor seemed doubtful when I asked if there is a test that can show if you ovulate

Hi
I have been ttc my 2nd for 8 months.
However my cycle has been all over the place since I started trying with a 3 month absence on its return I had a 33 day cycle then a 23 day cycle.
Now I am currenlty on cd 58 with no sign.

I would really like like to know whether I am ovulating or not.
I haven,t used opk,s as from what I have seen on here they can cause more questions than answers.
What I would like is a test or whatever to determine if I am ovulating or not.
I asked my doctor if there is a test I can have done that can tell me this but she seemed unsure as to whether there is.

Please could someone tell me is there a test that can be carried out that can definately tell me if ovulation is taking place or not.

My doctor is running some hormone tests the full works she tells me.
I had mentioned about a referral to a fertility specialist but she wasn,t very forthcoming on that she said she wanted to carry out every possible test first.

Is it possible that she is dragging her feet on this and isn,t really that well informed on fertiltiy matters and that I should push for a refferal.
My problem also is that there is no telling when I should be having all of these tests as I have no idea where I am in my cycle.
I am 37 years of age.

Hello,

There is a test that your Gp can do and im surprised he doesnt know1

If i rememberrightly its a day 21 ovulation blood test(which you have on guess what? day 21 of your cycle!)and that confirms whether ovulation has taken place.

Lost, have you tried temping? That's probably the easiest way to determine if you are ovulating. Following ovulation you get a surge of progesterone that causes your basal body temperature (BBT) to rise. The rule of thumb is that you get 3 temps that are higher than your previous 6 (with O happening on the day before the shift). There is free software that can help you chart it: www.fertilityfriend.com

I'd say you'd be much better off trying to gather information on your BBTs and your cervical mucus yourself rather than focusing on lab tests which have to be done at specific times in your cycle to mean anything. Also, your doctors can use that sort of information to find out what's going on.
