TTC & low iron anemia

Hi all, in February I was told I am low-iron anemic and also found out that it can negatively affect TTC & pregnancy. I was never told how low my levels of iron were or anything, but have been prescribed a 3 month course of ferrous sulfate (which I'm a month and a half into). How long should I expect it to be until my levels are good enough to be able to get pregnant? Or is it best to not try anymore until I've been cleared? I don't want to do the wrong thing and it's making me really worried and stressed.

Really hoping to see someone else has been here and had positive results!

I didn’t know my iron levels were low until I was pregnant. They were incredibly low that I remained on the iron tablets throughout my pregnancy and months after. Personally, I’d carry on ttc whilst taking the tablets. Chances are, your levels will have risen after the course of tablets but they may suggest you remain on them for a period longer.

I’d keep TTC, why not?

Do you know your feretin number ?

worldwidetravel2017 · 25/03/2024 21:07

To raise your feretin -
Eat iron rich cereal ,
Snack on dried apricots.
Eat kale and broccoli etc

Not everyones body absorbs iron tablets - mine doesnt

Definitely worth asking for your feretin to be checked after taking them for 3 - 4 weeks

@Hiddenvoice Sorry if it's rude to ask, but was your pregnancy relatively straightforward (besides the low iron) and baby healthy? I've just seen so much that's scared me and I really don't want to be put off if that's not going to be the case

@Rosesanddaisies1 I'm just really paranoid by the stuff I've seen online, which is quite stupid of me to believe everything I see 🙃 it just seems like there's more bad than good stories, but surely there's been plenty of pregnancies/babies born without a problem!

@worldwidetravel2017 Unfortunately I wasn't given any of my results from my FBC. I was just told that they were low. I'm due back soon so will definitely ask them if I can have a copy. Seems so daunting asking for your own test results 🙈

But lots of people get pregnant without even knowing they have low iron? If you get pregnant, you’ll get your iron levels tested anyway, and dealt with if necessary. Don’t google stuff like this. And don’t forget there’s no magic wand to get pregnant, sometimes it just takes time.

If you sign up to NHS app - you can see them there

Vit d , feretin and b12 arent included in full blood count

^ those need to be asked for

I’ve been on iron tablets throughout two pregnancies. Both babies were born perfectly healthy and after my second pregnancy I was able to come off the tablets fairly quickly.
