false positive CB test

lizalou · 27/03/2008 15:44

Thought a line was a line and got a faint but definite positive one on Sunday, then a very faint positive line Tuesday using CB tests.

Took a CB digital yesterday which was negative and hey presto my period arrived 4 days late today. Stopped BF 2 months ago and have had only one period since so that's assuming my cycle is back to 28 days...is this the risk of testing early? Could I have been a little pregnant and then it disapeared?Anyone else had a false positive from CB tests?

Hi I think false positives are quite common with clearblue tests, there are some sites which show pictures. There was a thread about it the other day.

I always bought my tests online from access diagnostics, they are very cheap and they do some early detection ones.

Hope you get the result you want soon, good luck.

lizalou · 27/03/2008 15:58

Thanks. I didn't know there was a problem with CB and false positives. Will have a look at the Ad website for next month.

Still feeling so sick-have done for two weeks. Maybe to do with my cycle kicking back in after stopping breatfeeding.

i thought you could only get a false negative, not a false positive

the test picks up HcG which is only present in urine if you are pregnant, no?

perhaps a chemical pregnancy?

CaptainKarvol · 27/03/2008 16:01

It is possible too that you had a chemical pregnacy, where the egg implants but only for a very short time, but long enough for you to produce some of the pregnancy hormone the tests detect, then comes away. I had a very faint +ve earlier this week, then my period started yesterday (+ve was a Sainsbury's own brand test).

NoNickname · 27/03/2008 16:01

A line is a line. I think you were pregnant but sadly the pregnancy failed very early on.

NoNickname · 27/03/2008 16:02

Sorry - that sounds very cold - I didn't mean it to be.

OracleInaCoracle · 27/03/2008 16:03

hi, it is possible to get false positives/evap lines with CB. www.peeonastick.com has loads of pics. the other explanation is that you had a chemical pg, very, very common. were you ttc?

lizalou · 27/03/2008 16:09

Lissielou we have very similar names.

Yes, I'm trying but it's only the first month so I'm not too upset.I have a 9 month old and I would like to have another very soon if I can. Now I've had my period I'm finding out just how much.
I've never heard of chemical pregnancies but makes sense. Off to google now.

I read that the Digital ClearBlue ones were not as sensitive as the non digital ones.

lizalou · 27/03/2008 16:10

Don't worry NoNickmane-you didn't sound cold,makes sense.

OP posts:
OracleInaCoracle · 27/03/2008 16:13

i hate the digital ones, they are much less sensitive. i always use CB now. i know they cost more, but they are more accurate. you just have to know the difference between an evap line and a bfp (sounds simple, but ive been caught out 100's of times)

lizalou · 27/03/2008 16:52

The first was definitely a positive line. Lesson learnt-test once my period is well and truley late. Thanks all.

lol liza-lou, im a bugger for early testing!

WorzselMummage · 27/03/2008 17:00

I had a bad experience with a CB test, Wee'd on it at something silly like 10 dpo it was negative, i think, i only looked at it for a minute of so then put it on the window sil.. went out for an hour or so and look at it again it was the brightest most convincing looking positive i have ever seen, a definate blue cross, nothing like an evaporation line or anything like it it was as if it was positive. I knew it probably wasnt right though, i'd only wee'd on it for something to do so did another which was definate negative and indeed i wasnt pregnant.

I wouldnt trust clearblue again tbh.

HairyToe · 27/03/2008 20:18

I keep reading on MN that Clearblue Digital is less sensitive but that hasn't been my experience at all. I had a chemical pregnancy last month that was only picked up by the CB digital tests which I did - normal CB and Ebay cheapie both came back negative.

I had positive CB digital 2 days before period due day, then again on period due day (other tests still negative) period arrived next day

OracleInaCoracle · 27/03/2008 20:30

see, hairytoe, my experience was totally different. my ep was not picked up by CBD the day before period was due. next day i got a bfp on CB regular

Deux · 27/03/2008 20:47

HairyToe, I found CB digital ultra sensitive too - I got a 'pregnant' on one and my hcg was only 5.4 - I had hcg bloods drawn that day! 2 days before my hcg was 20.3 and got a 'pregnant' then. Was a chemical pregnancy.

HairyToe · 27/03/2008 20:50

??? now i'm even more confused than i was a week ago when it happened

Trouble is from now on i'm unlikely to completely believe any pregnancy test whatever result it gives! Realistically I suppose if I ever do get a BFP again I'll end up spending ridiculaous amounts of money on various brands of pregnancy tests just to 'confirm' the result. aaaaaagggghhhhhhh.

roquefortlover · 27/03/2008 22:14

Hairytoe, I too had a cp last month and my experience was like yours - several positives with CB digi starting day before period was due, and up to 4 days after, but nothing on other tests (actually a faint +ive on First response now I come to think). Now I don't want to test at all unitl I'm a week late and I have got a complete hatred of CB digi for keeping on giving me false hope and confusing me! Boots cheapies for me now I think.

lizalou · 28/03/2008 10:08

Oh I'm pleased I'm not alone in this. Was thinking I was imagining lines.Have to say I used CB with my last pregnancy and it was accurate but not until day my period was due. I swear I'm going to wait until my period is a week late from now on-this week has been horrendous.

Still having nausea-did you ladies have this with your CPs?Starting to blame the pregnacare tablets....switching to plain folic acid today.

OP posts:
lennied · 28/03/2008 14:38

Lizalou, pregnacare make me naseous too, might be worth switching. I taken sanatogen pronatal now - cheaper too. I had a CP the cycle before conceiving DD a couple of years ago. PG symptoms continued for a few days but tailed off with period. HTH

HairyToe · 29/03/2008 18:21

Sorry I've been away so am a bit late in responding but Deux and Roquefortlover I'm so glad to hear your experiences were similar to mine. I waas really beginnning to think I had gone mad and imagined that pregnant word (twice!). Sounds weird but psychologically it seemed harder seeing the actual word Pregnant and then it not being real (weird I know) than if it had been a line or a cross.

HairyToe · 29/03/2008 18:23

PS lizalou I had no symptoms to speak of at all - was gobsmacked when i got a positive. My boobs were a bit sore but then they have been on and off since and I'm beginning to think thewy always are...maybe I need a bigger bra

roquefortlover · 29/03/2008 19:39

Hi Hairytoe, I know just what you mean about reading the word...I got 4 "Pregnants" and if I had only doen other tests prob. wld not even have thought I was pg, which wld have saved me a lot of upset!
