HyCoSy experience and success stories

Hi all,

I’m 32 and have been trying to conceive for 14 months. I just wanted to share my positive recent HyCoSy experience in case it is helpful to others (I nervously read lots of posts before mine).

After all the build up, it was quick (no more than 5 minutes from start to finish) and far less painful than a bikini wax. I took Ibuprofen before and would describe it as an uncomfortable sensation. My tubes didn’t show any signs of blockage so I’m sure this helped make it mostly pain free.

I’d recommend taking a pad with you as it was similar to a light period after. But I made it to a gentle yoga class that evening and don’t have any cramping or bleeding on day 2.

My doctor also scanned my ovaries again which was helpful to have done for a second time, though I still have low ovarian reserve with about 3-4 follicles/developing eggs per ovary when it would ideally be 12. My husband has 0-1% normal sperm morphology too despite us being otherwise fit and healthy.

I’d love to hear any HyCoSy success stories to keep me positive and hopeful!

Thank you and good luck all x

@CotswoldConceptionJourney Hi! Glad to hear you had a positive experience. I had a HSG test (which is very very similar) a few years ago. I was so anxious and, like yourself, found it actually was nothing to worry about! I went for the test around day 8 or 9 of my cycle and actually got pregnant that same cycle after TTC for such a long time! I also had no blockages or issues but it must have cleared out some debris or tubal goo as we didn’t change anything else we were doing!

Best of luck to you! 🤞🏻 xx

I had a HSG earlier this month so similar. We on cycle #16 following a successful vasectomy reversal in Jan 23 and normal tests in Jan 24. I had a chemical last month and then my HSG this month. I found it super painful but also no blockages- wondering if the pain means it cleared some gunk!
Currently 8dpo now so will see if we've had any luck following the HSG.

@CotswoldConceptionJourney thank you so much for your lovely comment. No success this month so onto cycle 17. Decided we will go for IVF in Sept if no joy before then. How are you doing?

@GoodMorningWorld thank you for the advice and well wishes xx

riverlodge90 · 20/03/2024 15:47

@CotswoldConceptionJourney

Thanks for the info it's great to hear some positive stories.

Can I ask if this was on the NHS and how long did it take from your GP referring to getting the test done?

Optimistic66 · 20/03/2024 17:27

I had my Hycosy on the 27th Feb - however have long cycles between 30 -45 and only ovulate sometimes... but curious to also see if there is any success.

I also found the Hycosy ok - I took 2 x CoCodamel 1 hour prior to it. Uncomfortable at most but not particularly painful. My tubes were fine so not sure if you had blocked tubes maybe it would be more painful.

Optimistic66 · 20/03/2024 17:30

@CotswoldConceptionJourney and also to add to my above message.

Similarly to you - I have about 4/5 follicles per ovary but my doctor didnt seem to concerned about this. I have a AMH of 7.8 which was 11.8 this time last year. (This concerned me...)

My husband had a sperm sample in Sept 23 and morphology was 1% or 2% and motility was 32% - He was advised to take Proxeed by his consultant and add zinc rich food such as walnuts i believe. He then had a sample in Jan and His Morphology was 4% so normal and Motility 44%.

It was the Proxeed Plus and it was on amazon - it is expensive and recommended 2x a day but most of the time he was only taking 1x a day.

ouch44 · 20/03/2024 17:49

I got pregnant with my DS - soon to be 18- the cycle after a HSG. We also got to the top of the NHS waiting list the day I found out I was PG with him!

DH had had low sperm count too but he had revered it with no pants no baths, v little alcohol and lots of vitamins (based on Zita West advice)

I'd had 2 ectopics and a miscarriage prior to that. Then I got Pg with DC2 the month we started trying thinking it'd probably take forever again!

Good luck I hope it works for you too! I'm sure things have moved on a bit since then so I'm hoping it's even more likely!

CotswoldConceptionJourney · 21/03/2024 22:19

@teampacey wishing you so much luck on your IVF journey, but hoping you fall pregnant naturally before then.

This week will be our first try post HyCoSy and into month 15 for us. Will give it three more goes before going down the IVF route too.

Slightly nervous as feel a bit fevery post HyCoSy. It was a week ago now but I feel a white heat around my tummy area. Hard to know what’s real and in my head these days from all the symptom spotting that comes with TTC.

Let us know how you get on 💛

@Optimistic66 that’s fantastic that your husbands results improved so much, I hope that paired with your HyCoSy will make all the difference!

I have my fingers crossed that my husbands results improve too when he repeats his tests in April. The only silver lining if not is that we’ll be eligible for IVF on the NHS, otherwise it’s a long wait or going down the private route.

Keep up the optimism, we’ll get there 🙌

@ouch44 I’m so sorry to hear about your ectopic pregnancies and miscarriage, but it’s really lovely to read you had your two children - thank you for sharing 💛

I’ve had several friends take years with their first and then fall pregnant so quickly with their second - magic!

@riverlodge90 absolutely! All NHS via Gloucester and Cheltenham hospital.

My GP referred me to the fertility clinic in November 23 after one year of TTC. We had our first appointment in January which was a transvaginal scan, followed by my HyCoSy this March. All in all I’ve been quite impressed at the speedy referral times.

I hope it’ll be the same for you 💛

Hi, would love to hear any updates? Xx

CotswoldConceptionJourney · 21/10/2024 14:01

Alas, nothing from our side. Nearing two full years of TTC.

Microbiome testing showed up some imbalances though, as did my Medichecks blood tests so we’re focusing on those and also further testing such as DNA fragmentation and microbiome for my husband via either ScreenMe or Fertility Solutions.

Once we’ve exhausted every avenue and tried to get to the bottom of our infertility, we’ll turn to IVF. For us, we have to be trying for 3 years to qualify for 2 free rounds on the NHS.

I’m sure HyCoSy is brilliant for those that need it, just not the piece of the puzzle that’s missing for us. I do worry it has led to an infection or inflammation on my side though.

Hope all is going well on your end 🙌

Thanks so much OP.
Sorry to hear you’re still on this journey!
What is microbiome testing?

I am due for a HyCosy this week, and our plan to to start IVF in the new year if no luck! We’ve been “actively” trying since the beginning of the year but I’ve been off contraception since 2022 and husband has a slightly low count so with that in mind we’re hoping to just crack on!!!

Sending you lots of good wishes for all to come xx

PawfectlySweet · 20/09/2025 09:31

Hi everyone,

This is my first post on here but I couldn't not return to share my experience after reading so many helpful stories over the last 18 months.

We started ttc at the beginning of 2024 and by the end of the year hadn't had a trace of a positive. So we had all the usual blood tests, scans, semen analysis etc and everything came back normal, which was so confusing and frustrating.

We were then referred to Care Fertility and recommended IVF. At the consultation, I asked about having a hycosy prior to starting IVF as it seemed like common sense to know the tubes were clear and was dismissed, citing it was pointless as 'you will have to do IVF either way'. I still had a niggling feeling about it so ignored the advice and paid for a hycosy privately. It was the most painful thing I've ever had done and I was told my tubes were open on the day.

This was in August, my period never came and I'm now pregnant. I put this down to the flushing of the tubes without a doubt so wanted to share my success in case anyone is considering IVF without possibly trying less invasive investigations first 💓
