Light, 2 day period - is this ok for conception?

Hi,

I've recently started tracking my periods on an app and using a menstrual cup to measure flow. I have a 25 day cycle and bleed for two days. My blood loss over all is around 20ml.

I'm getting myself worried about having a short cycle and light, short periods. Do you think I need to be worried? Is there anything I can do to improve this?

I'm 30 years old and fit and healthy.

Thanks in advance for any help / advice / reassurance Flowers

Hi jacquettalux, I don't have any answers, but I too have a two day period and ttc, wondering if it will be an issue or not. I had an internal ultrasound and my womb lining was good so they said, so I'm hoping my lining is OK for implantation.

Thanks for replying! That's great to hear about your ultrasound. Mine is 2 days long and I've only lost around 15ml of blood on the last two. I'm hoping this is just normal for me and my body, and won't cause an issue. Do you bleed heavily on the two days?

@jacquettalux It could mean that your lining isn’t thick enough causing a short period. You should get that checked out.

Hi. I can't answer for certain of course but I always had very light periods (2-3 days and really only needed a pantliner) and had 4 children. I actually had 8 conceptions, (2 chemicals and 2 miscarriages) and always conceived within 2 months of trying.

Now menopausal and consider myself to have just got lucky!

Thanks for replying! I appreciate it. I had also read about this which is what had caused my worry! I had never worried about light/short periods before.

How would I get it checked? I'm nervous to start investigations when we haven't even started trying yet (delayed due to travelling to a country with Zika). I wonder if we should try for a few months first and see how we get on. Whilst I like to be in the 'know,' I can also cause myself a lot of anxiety prematurely and I know stress can also cause problems so it's a balance.

Thanks - I really appreciate your response. I've read lots of other women saying the same thing, so I guess short/light periods can be problematic for some but not an issue for others. Thanks for the reassurance Flowers

@jacquettalux You get an ultrasound done after ovulation. You can pay for a private ultrasound just to check, it doesn’t need to be a full on fertility investigation it’s just a precaution.

Great - thanks. Will look into it.

I've always had short, light periods (2 days of bleeding and then a third of very light almost spotting). It took me a while to conceive (11 months) but did so without assistance and when I had some baseline fertility assessments done my lining was a good thickness so no suggestion of a problem there.

Thanks so much for replying. At what point in your conception journey did you have the tests done? Flowers

I had blood tests and a scan during Cycle 9 (and my husband had a semen analysis) and a HyCoSy during Cycle 10 - they looked at my lining during both cycles and were happy with it. We paid privately as just wanted to ensure no obvious issues at that stage that could either be resolved with simple treatment or that would mean natural conception was never likely to happen (there were none, all tests clear). We conceived in Cycle 11 - I've seen elsewhere that HyCoSy apparently boosts your odds for a few cycles afterwards, no idea if that made the difference for us though or if just a fun coincidence!

Thanks! I really appreciate you taking the time to reply. I've read mixed reviews of fertility clinics eg. that some will try and sell / push treatments etc that you may not need? What was your experience like?

The clinic we went to were great, we were clear upfront that we were basically there for an MOT and if all issue-free would continue to try without assistance for at least a further year, so maybe that coloured their approach. When we had our wrap up consultation after test results were back they were very much in agreement that we should just keep going and no specific treatment suggested at that time.

Hi @jacquettalux after my miscarriage my periods were very light and short - 2/3 days of brown spotting and no red blood. I conceived and baby is now 8 months.
So it can be fine, I’d say worth trying for a bit first before stressing out over tests, but see how it goes.

Thanks Natpat! I think this is what I need to do. I think the stress / worry is not good for me and I need to try and relax and just try for a bit Smile Having a menstrual cup has been great in lots of ways but being able to measure blood loss to the ml has given me a new area of anxiety!

Blackberryhill - that's great to hear! Thanks for sharing your experience. Was the clinic based in London or elsewhere?
