How to increase progesterone naturally??

I’ve had 5 chemical pregnancies now, and after doing a lot of research it’s all leading to one thing… low progesterone. I have an appointment with GP booked next week, but is there any way to increase progesterone naturally?

Following. I've had 4 MC, went to GP about progesterone and he wouldn't prescribe it nor test for it so I am waiting for my referral from the hospital (could take a year) so wondering how to increase this also.

My progesterone is very low 30 being a healthy number and I'm 18, I had a chemical pregnancy and decided to try to naturally boost my progesterone with diet, exercise and supplements nothing worked. I'm trying to get help from the Dr's but it's looking like I'll need to go private.

When you say your number was 18 - which day of your cycle was that ?
& how regular / long are your cycles ?
& which day did yoy ovulate that cycle ?

Non strenuous exercise and weight management can help. Plus food rich in zinc and B6, such as broccoli, nuts and pulses.

GPs can be pretty useless. If you get pregnant you can self refer to an early pregnancy unit and see if they'll prescibe it for you:
https://www.aepu.org.uk/find-a-unit/

Blood tests can be done privately very easily. Even online via superdrug doctor, for example (home test you send off after pricking your finger).

Randox health are only 30 gbp to test ' female hormones ' // progsterone etc

Leannej1986 · 07/04/2024 21:55

@worldwidetravel2017 progesterone tests have to be done 7 days before your period is due, so that's when I got it done. My cycles are 26 days, but I'm always spotting a week before my actual period.

Ellysa · 07/04/2024 21:58

GPs, and the NHS in general, know very little about fertility. Go private if you can, at least for a consultation.

After my IVF transfer they put me on provesterone suppositories. I don’t know anything about increasing progesterone naturally but with infertility nature sucks frankly. Find a great gynaecologist and get some proper drugs

Plumchumm · 08/04/2024 03:28

I heard that eating lots of carbs and just eating a good amount of food boosts progesterone. So if you’re feeling cravings then bulking on food might not be so bad. But I haven’t looked up actual sources for this

Spotting = low progesterone normally

allgoodthings84 · 08/04/2024 14:04

I used to spot 4/5 days before AF started and had more than 1 early loss/CP so insisted on being tested for low progesterone. They did the tests, twice (2 cycles in a row) and my progesterone at 6dpo was over 50 so definitely wasn’t a progesterone issue. I then got pregnant again which stayed sticky and have my 7 month old daughter sleeping in my arms now.

I never found out why I spotted or had the losses but weirdly since my periods came back after the birth I no longer spot before AF.

Rosesanddaisies1 · 08/04/2024 14:13

If you can, I'd go private directly. They'll prescribe progesterone.

Thanks everyone. I have a recurrent miscarriage clinic appointment in June so hopefully will get some answers then!

Just following up on this as currently think I have the same issue, did anything work for you @Berrylady

Muddysocks1 · 12/08/2025 15:45

Not the OP but I have lowish progesterone and did 3 months of progesterone suppositories (Cyclogest) but didn’t fall pregnant in that time. My understanding is you need to find and treat the root cause of low progesterone, which is sometimes an ovulation issue. That said I did lengthen luteal phase with supplements/healthy eating/bette sleep (hard to say what helped!)

MotherOfShihTzus · 12/08/2025 16:16

I have PCOS which includes hormone imbalance; insulin is vital in balancing hormones, and to control insulin, reducing sugar / gluten are the best way to do that, sub 20g total a day (and that’s looking on all ingredients for added sugar, in its different names). If you don’t want to / can’t go down the medical supplementation route

You could send for a private test.

Ended up being prescribed progesterone suppositories which worked. I honestly do feel that my little girl wouldn’t be here without them!

This is absolutely not true in the slightest just so everyone knows if you are TTC and concerned about progesterone.

While eating more calories/carbs in just the luteal phase may not affect progesterone, eating too few calories/carbs does affect hormones generally including progesterone in the luteal phase. And this was my source

but if you are eating enough and still have a regular period, and you need to improve progesterone in the luteal phase enough to sustain pregnancy, then yeah carbs or calories aren’t going to do that. You will either need suppositories, or fertility meds like clomid or Letrozole to create stronger ovulation which leads to sufficient progesterone. Or maybe thyroid meds if that’s an issue.

Do Very Low Carb Diets Mess Up Some Women's Hormones?

Very low carb diets can cause weight loss and improve metabolic health for many people. However, they may cause hormonal problems in some women.

ajc1994 · 15/08/2025 09:23

Thanks all. I’m definitely eating enough (probably too much!) but I have blood tests next week although itll only be cd10 so not my LP. I have started lots of supplements/vitamins and adding new foods to my diet and giving seed cycling a go, it’s 10 days currently so I’m trying to push to 12 eventually if I can. Will be good to rule out thyroid as this does run in my family

Its not to with carbs, its to do with fat and leptin
